Langshan Thread!!!

Does she have a straight comb? It doesn't look like it. She looks like a mixed breed to me.
Her comb looks like a pea comb to me. This might explain the white egg that showed up in my nest box this AM. I guess that I had just assumed that with the langshan showing so heavily in her, we'd at least get a tinted egg due to the bloom.

I'm so confused because while they appear to be saddle feathers the Langshan does not go after the hens like the bantam rooster does and she/he runs from the bantam rooster when he's trying to mate and he has tried to mate "her" as well. Driving me nuts.

How old is the bird? My Langshan cockerels take forever to mature. They rarely crow before at least 28 weeks of age and don't show much interest in the females until that age or even older.

Are you sure that this is a pullet/hen? I went back and looked at your pics this morning. It looks like your bird has pointy hackle and pointy saddle feathers. By looking at the pics, I would have guessed that it is a boy.

It is hard to tell from the pics but if those last 2 shots show the start of  pointy, narrow saddle feathers than I would say cockerel.  My Langshan cockerels/cocks are big lover boys.  Are you able to keep him if he is a he?

If it turns out to be a he and he stays as lovable as he is now I will keep him. It is my favorite, I adore him (her).

Ya know, I am totally not sure. Just got the bird a few days ago. The seller swears up and down that the bird is a laying hen, I asked him 3 times because of the appearance of the bird. If it ends up being a male, the seller will swap out for a different bird. I guess time will tell!

Thanks for the input. Disappointing but I'm already attached after 6 weeks. I have a small bantam rooster that is a real pain, attacks and creates a ruckus in the flock daily. May be finding a new home for him.

I'd love some input re: this bird.

Purchased her a couple of days ago. The seller swears up and down that it's actually a female and she does in fact lay eggs. He has no reason to lie to me, as we have an arrangement that if I end up with a roo or a particularly noisy bird, he will swap the bird out. Either way, there seems to be either "bad" genetics or some sort of abnormality/mix in there. As far as I know, black langshans are supposed to have very dark eyes and be solid black. This bird has normal brown eyes and has white streaks. Doesn't bother me as I will not be breeding the bird, but more curious than anything.

This bird is definitely a mixed breed (easily seen from the pea comb and foreign color, I'd guess Brahma/Langshan cross if I were a betting man) , and definitely male. A quick look at the saddle and hackle feathers is all that's needed for that.
