Langshan Thread!!!

So the bald shoulder patches and lack of tale tells me boy! Is he the one to run forward in the brooder instead of run away? That’s a male trait, and people take it for being “friendly”. It’s actually more of a show of dominance. :p
I think it’s also the reason most people’s “favorite” chick ends up being the boy in the group.
He doesn't run forward but he's not afraid also and he's kind of curious. How is the Langshan rooster temperament in your experiences ?
I know they can be all different..but just a question.

I had one from a hatchery that was mean, and I gave him to someone for their crock pot, in the days before I learned how to butcher. His son was also mean, and he became the bird I learned how to on. The one I have now is the lowest in pecking order in his group, and he has not showed any mean traits. I’m not sure if he is the grandson, or if he is unrelated. So I don’t have a very good record so far with my Langshan roosters.

I ordered a new batch this year from a different hatchery. I ended up with 5 cockerels and 3 pullets. (They are all blue.) So I will be watching to see which one or two turns out the best, as far as temperament, as well as looks and health.

I love my Langshan roosters! They have all been gentle giants! A few years ago, I hatched 3 black cockerels from shipped eggs. They were mean to the other chicks and to people. I was thinking about keeping one of them but on processing day, they acted up and one even drew blood. I quickly decided that I didn’t want attitudes like that in my breeding flock!

Good day, I just picked up my three langshan chicks this week! Very excited to see how things progress.
I have two blue and a splash.

This girl has an interesting story. I bought some eggs from a farmer who said these were Langshans. I'm assuming that's what she is. She was the only one to hatch. At first, I thought she was a boy. I even named her 'Big Boy.' lol
As time passes, I'm still not sure if she's a boy or a girl. People seem to think she's a girl.
None the less, here she is. She was hatched about 10/18/20.

I tried zooming in on the photos, in order to see if those are saddle feathers at the base of the tail. But I just can’t see them clearly enough. Probably the light and shadows of the photo. But her head and comb certainly look like a girl to me. I hope you will post more photos as he/she grows, so we can see what the end result is.

Here she is today. Think she's a hen.
