PetRock, what colors and what sexes do you have currently. When you say "scratch" do you mean just blacks, just blues, just splashes?

I ALWAYS prefer the black over splashes. That way, you have nice dark babies. I just hatched some and am really impressed with the depth of blue on them thus far. I also like to have pure blacks, pure splashes and a pen of pure blues.

ALWAYS mark the blacks that come from the blue pens. Why? Because it can weaken the black color if you use them in your "true" black pens. Only use these birds if they have excellent type, combs and leg feathering for your blue pens. I would use the blue and splashes interchangeably in pens. If you start noticing the color washing out, then put a "TRUE" black in to darken the color up again.

I am trying to keep a small group of them.

I love Langshans and want so badly to be able to breed them. I have several young birds hatched from eggs from you, Pawhead/Skyline, and eJim Heinz. Unfortunately, most of them are cockerels. I have one splash cockerel, 6 black cockerels, and 1 white cockerel that I am for sure not keeping. I also have 2 blue pullets and 2 black pullets. I know that's not very many birds to choose from but is it enough to start?

Cheryl has 11 older juveniles (17-18 weeks) at the ranch that we are trying to find a place for. If I could afford them, I would keep all of them except for the white pair. But in order to re-coop costs, we are trying to sell pairs or trios from the ranch. I am headed out there today or tomorrow to get some current pics of them. This is what we have if anyone is interested in them:

2 Black: both cockerels
3 Blue: all cockerels
4 Splash: 2 cockerels, 2 pullets
2 White: 1 cockerel, 1 pullet

Cheryl also has 2 blue pullets that are around 13 weeks old if anyone wants them as part of a breeding pair or trio.

It definitely is a good place to start! I had a pair when I started!

I would keep the blacks and blues. Keep the splash cockerel as a back up if you can. You can never have too many backups....

Thank you! I appreciate the help! I will post pics of them when they get a little bit older. Most of the boys have stubby, little tails right now.

I'm going to try to keep the Splash roo. He's a sweetheart! I'm keeping a close eye on the black boys. I have 1 from you, 1 from Pawhead/Skyline, and 4 from Jim. The 4 from Jim are a gang and we are thinking about giving them gangsta rapper names.

I just hatched out the last bit for the next 6-9 months.

I wanted more white bantams, more LF blacks and blues. And I think I hit the jackpot! Having some excellent hatches with this new male! He is from the same bloodlines (took me forever to find another Forrest male!) and has all the attributes I'm after. Nice wide tail, head, compact comb, excellent U shape, gentle demeanor...

Love him. And his new blood seems to have increased the hatchability of the eggs! Really impressed thus far. He has a lower tail set than I'd like to see, so I will have to cull hard for that. But overall, very happy with the chicks that are coming out so far!

Oh he is a largefowl!

When I started years ago, all I had was a single black male and single black female. Although I tried to keep every chick alive, I was only able to keep maybe 2 a year alive. And then, Clyde eventually just stopped breeding at about 5 years old. I guess he just stopped caring? So, all I had to breed were the siblings to each other. It recently started causing some unpleasant results in vitro. So..I was on the search for a new male from the same lines to create a bit of variability in the genetics.

It seems to have worked!

The bantams are the most virile and hatchable of all the birds I've ever had. Good Lord. The whites pop out like popcorn and the blacks and blues like to pop out a day later than the whites with the LF hatching on the day, almost every time!

The orphan chick is doing well and was inside in a box for 3 days. Luckily the other Silkie mum hatched one out last Saturday and she accepted the ring in no worries. It's funny though the chick that I hand hatched, presumably 3 days premature, is larger and more active.

Well, most recently there were chicks that died in shell with their insides on the outside. Brains formed on the outside....it was definitely gross.



I do have a hen for sale. Blue LF, 1 year old. I need her gone ASAP so I'm asking $10. I'm near State College, PA and can't ship.
