Langshan Thread!!!

Pics
It's possible, but judging by how fast the first bird is maturing (not always a good thing)...it's possible he has some extra room on those legs from the extra time.

All of my birds were hatched on different dates...I'll be darned if they aren't all caught up to each other now!

That third pullet...I LIKE her. Nice head, good width of feather, good stance. The tails almost always make them look dumpy until about 7+ months. You'll go back and forth ALOT on those...I like the width and I like the fact her tail hasn't come in yet. That is promising. Her legs are nice and thick with good spacing and I have a feeling when she stands correctly, she's got a great wingset.

Good bird!

I'm not divulging anything on the males yet! But width of back and tail is something you're gonna want to keep! ;)

I also wouldn't write off the dark blue pullet in the right background of the photo above of that splash cockerel. She looks promising as well!

I like the pullet in the first picture and the third picture. The one in the third picture has a bit of a twist in her comb. Let's see if I can explain later. I'm just leaving to swap a cochin cockerel for a Peacock. :D

I see what you're seeing.

For anyone else who might not see it, it's about mid-way up the 3rd female's head. See that little "kink" to it in the middle?

That MAY grow out with age, or it may eventually show that the comb is too "floppy" or "large" for the head. I would keep an eye on her though.

I also agree with Jim on Bird #1, but she may have a tail that comes a bit too pointed. Number 2, I'm not crazy about at all. She's washed out and has a pointed tail. She could almost be a twin to a bird I'm trying to sell up here.

Petrock, will you tell me which bird is your favorite (not personality wise) and WHY they are your personal favorite?? Trying to draw out the learning experience for everyone! Plus...I have little to no life and enjoy your torture! ;)

I had a hard time picking. I wanted to be fair to the birds that weren't from my line.

I have an idea. On the SQ Speckled Sussex thread, we went through the Standard one section at a time. We then analyzed various birds to figure the Standard out. Is anybody game for that?maybe we could get Walt to join us.

i don't know if I've shown these here before.

I think this is a great idea!

I'll see if Bill and Walt would be ok with chiming in on them! The only thing is that those birds are very young and in all reality, too young to choose from. They can change so much. Some things jump out at me, while others are subtle and will need to wait until they are a bit older to decide between.

I was hoping some of us with older stock would be willing to post pictures to analyze. (Hint hint). I have 3 cocks and 4 hens I'd be willing to post. When we did this with the Speckled Sussex we started with the head and moved to other parts of the body (feet/legs, wings, tail, back, chest, color, ect.). We needed good examples as well as faults to see what we were looking for.

Hi Langshan lovers,

my friend Thorlief introduced me to this thread. I keep black and white Croad Langshan bantams but focus on breeding blues. The breed is so rare in this country and the blues are not tollerated by the breed society to its great to have somewhere to discuss the birds and share photos and experiences.

I aim to breed show quality birds although I do not show as the society rules prevent me from showing my blues. I breed birds for the beginer and back yard keeper as I love the breeds looks and and its placid, friendly and intelegent nature. I sell my birds to people who want a hen thay is pretty, lays well, handles easily and becomes part of the family.

I raise most of my birds in the incubator but also let my broodys raise a couple when their hormones get the better of them. I have recently written a poultry book which is available in paperback and e-book format and I use my photos to illustrate my writing.

My birds free range all year round and their feathers can get a little yellowed, browned or lightened by the sun but I love to see them out and about, leading a natural life.

I have really enjoyed reading your posts and looking at your pictures, so do please feel free to give me feed back on my birds either complementary or constructive.

This is a splash pullet called Amy who I hatched in may 2012

This is a Ivor a young male from of the same age who was hatched by his mother Daisy

These blues and blacks are all part of the same incubator hatch in May.

This is Rufus their father who I bred last year - he is still growing his tail feathers after the moult

This is Ivors sister Lilly who was also raised by Daisy.

This is Daisy as a young hen. Lilley will hopefully look like this next spring

. I hope to sell the blacks on next year as I plan to start with some large fowl Croad Langshans.
