Langshan Thread!!!

thorleif,
That picture is HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol!!!!!!!!!!!! I would wear that shirt proudly! That is hilarious!

msladyhawke, that second pullet, she is looking darn fine! Her comb is a bit big, but she's got a great back and underside. The legs are a bit short, but since she was from a black x white breeding, it's to be expected. Still a darn good looking bird! And of course...your little guy is gorgeous as ever!

cluckcluckluke, you can definitely see the Australorp coming into play on those. Very interesting to see the differences! Are the German Langshans in your area as well? One day I WILL get my hands on some of those birds or eggs!

As for aggression, my whites couldn't care less. They are so calm, but that's probably because I constantly have them in my hands. They have so much more progress to make than the blacks and blues in conformation. Making some good strides. The female blacks aren't mean at all, until they have babies. The only black male I had was psychotic so I butchered him. The blue male isn't aggressive but won't come up for treats. The male hasn't attacked me again since the beat down. The black cockerel I have is still acting like a gentleman. I will probably have to cull him as he has some pretty severe red leakage. It's not awful, but I don't want it to continue.
So, Mikaela, are the whites known for having shorter legs? I'm really enjoying watching the boys maturing and I've noticed that the white cockerel has stockier legs. So far, no crowing so they get to stay here!

I started with some birds that were very close to hatchery birds. After the F1 generation to a black male, I could tell the shorter legs were going to be an issue, but knew if I kept breeding them to my blacks which had the longer legs, they would eventually get there. I gave all of my white largefowl up to Joe and some white bantams to him as well. I just couldn't breed them the way they needed to be and felt like they'd do better with someone that would have the space and time. So, off they went. Now, I'm getting the white chicks from my blacks. The legs seem to be MUCH longer, the eyes are nice and very dark as compared to the pearl color they had originally. It will take some work, but already I'm about 4 generations ahead of what I would have been had I only used the white birds to breed. So, my line I would say yes. The whites do tend to have stockier and shorter legs.

New babies hatched yesterday. 4 hatched. Sooo cute!

Some 50-60 years ago they ran out of Croad Langshans in Australia, which led to them using a few Australorps in the breeding, and while it helped fertility, the Langshans never really recovered, you cannot breed the good old type back again. It ruined the Langshans, yes, but it also rescued them from getting totally extinct. No need to say, they had to re-write the Standard.

Yes i would have to agree the American or Croad Langshans have more of a distinct look about them, almost a tougher stance maybe a bit more proud looking.

They are an original breed, bred for 100's, maybe 1.000's of years, which is why they breed as true to type as they do. I have bred 100's of chicks over the years, and ever really "weeded" out maybe 10? Nearly 100% of my chicks can be used for breeding, the only thing I shall have to improve is their combs, even wattles get the right shape/size in the majority. Of course with the banties it is harder, as they are actually "made" from other breeds. It is (at least here in UK) amazing how they are similar to LF both in looks and character. I used to breed both white and black bantams, and they were really good types. Now I only breed LF whites, they do need all my runs/coops. I have tried to develop 2 lines/strains, and I have been lucky to find good outcrosses for them, and I have also "found" other strains, with breeders that are happy to swap a rooster once in a while, so the gene-bank are probably bigger now that 140 years ago here in UK. And then, there is you lot, the Americans with your lines/strains, so yes,

the future for Langshans are bright. Let us face it, there is no reason why you cannot call your Langshans Croads, because that is what they are.
