Laree's "I CAN'T STOP MYSELF FROM HATCHING!!!" Hatch-a-long

18 out of 20 eggs under by broodies are developing! I think some are due Saturday. Not really sure.

And because I have so many darned broodies right now hogging nest boxes my regular layers have started having bad habits like:
1. Laying in the muddy run
2. Laying under the nest boxes
3. Laying under the food dish

Then broodies get confused and don't make their way back to the proper nest box (the ones that aren't caged in)... found one UNDER the darned nest box on THREE eggs that had been laid today when I got home from work. So then I trucked in 3 cages and moved 2 broodies, who were both really angry about the whole thing. I will move another one after dark tonight and hope to get the actual eggs under Angry Broody 2 in Cage 2 as well. That'll leave 1 broody in a next box, but caged in.

During chick days at our local feed store, every time I walked in the cashier would tell me they had chicks or didn't have chicks. I put more eggs in the bator. Some hybrids and some light sussex. Tick tock tick tock tick tock.

What breed are your broodies? I have some young silkies that haven't started laying yet. Hoping they can take over as my incubator in a few weeks.

I have one hen that doesn't give a crap where she lays an egg. She is the only one that doesn't put up a fuss when something is different. Hmmm, nesting boxes all taken.... right here looks good. She even laid one while she was sitting on a perch.

Seems like everyone is broody. Gold laced wyandotte and phoenix and mixed banty hen hatched eggs this month. Sitting on eggs now is cuckoo marans, barred rock, buff orphington and jersey giant. Speckled Sussex keeps going on and off a nest so she's not trusted with eggs.

And you know then there's the 24 eggs in my incubator...

Just counted. Have 8 broodies.

Dozer (on 3 eggs)
Hissyfit (on 10? eggs)

Sassafrass- the only hen I WANT to hatch eggs from.
Daphne- sits in an empty box (my avatar)
Mystic- 0 eggs, but bites like a mofo.
Orange- newly broody, in full moult.
Bloomers- MFC, but sits on the ground.
Teapot- She's sneaky...she'll hide eggs in her wings. I've tossed her a good 10 feet out of the box (nicely) and she'll WALK AWAY while smuggling an egg.

Give me 5 minutes, I bet there will be more.

Yesssssssssssssss this is what I'm talking about! I tried to tell my boyfriend how to shake the girls down before bed the past few nights when I've been in a controlled substance combined with virus combined with migraine induced coma.

He didn't understand how those sweet faced (maybe he was the one taking the drugs cause they sure aren't sweet to me) broody girls can smuggle all kinds of egg related contraband!

I've moved all 4 of them now to protected quarters so no more RIR trying to lay an egg on top of a broody hen in a nest box. I hope not anyway. This open nest box phenomena will probably be extinct tomorrow with a new set of broodies to replace these 4. The only good news about our crappy rainy weather that we've had for 10 days now (and predicted for 9 of the next 10 days, but who's counting?!) is maybe the lack of sun will stop the hormones! The only thing not broody around these parts is ME!

Barred Rock? Really? I cant imagine my BR's sitting on eggs. Mine are such spazzes. Such attitude! I walk in to check for eggs and the same hen every time, pecks me real hard on the knee or butt. You laugh, but it really hurts. That is the only time I feel the desire to drop kick a chicken. I just curse at her instead.
