Laree's "I CAN'T STOP MYSELF FROM HATCHING!!!" Hatch-a-long

I hatched a turkey today. Snuck the egg in a couple days after I had set the others. The other eleven hatched a couple days ago, but they accepted this newbie with just a few pecks on the head. Now I have an even dozen. WOOT! (and a sportsman and a Dickie full waiting to hatch, full of other stuff.)

I am bad at candling, ChestnutRidge, but I kept everything that had even a vague darkish-look inside. By day 18, I ended out keeping some in that I originally thought were not developing, and they went on to hatch, so don't give up on them yet.

I don't know the effect x-raying has. I got shipped eggs from California, 3000 miles away, and they were only marked "fragile". In fact, when I joked to the postman as I picked them up at the post office that the shipper was worried that the package might "sit in a hot truck all day" (it was snowing lightly), he said, "what's in there?" It seems like they must have been x-rayed at some point, I don't know. I had 10 of 13 hatch, with one that died after the fact. Have you heard exactly what happens if they are x-rayed? I'm curious.

just2rosey: I can relate to the "drilled finger" here. DH has had stapled, biscuited, nail-gun, etc., various fingers. The worst was the table saw, - lost the tip in that one. Hope he heals up soon!

Ok the xray talk got me thinking.

I now have a project.

My husband was a surgical RN and one of his best friends is a radiologist.

Sending 3 dozen eggs. He's going to xray them covered and uncovered and then I'll put them in the bator.

That is soooooo awesome! What a great experiment!

Start a thread on it.

Hey good idea

LOL

He also had a good friend that works at one of the main post offices. Maybe I should see if she'll run a few through for me too.

Hmmm.......Haven't seen her since about a year before he died, so I'm kind of CHICKEN, but I just might see if I can get hold of her.

Didn't even think to ask her about shipping problems. Matter of fact she just came to mind.

another duh moment

Also make sure you have some from the same batch of eggs as a control group.

Excellent thinking! I'm a highschool chemistry teacher so it makes me smile when someone thinks of the "controls" and "variables"
