Laree's "I CAN'T STOP MYSELF FROM HATCHING!!!" Hatch-a-long

Fuzz butts in the brooder! 6 of the 9 eggs that made it to lockdown (although the last time I candled was day 14, so....) have hatched. I have 5 Silver Ameraucanas and 1 Wheaten. ETA: Still, today is day 21, but no hatches or pips overnight, so I'm not so hopeful.

The Wheatens had a much tougher time during the 5 days of shipping. (

) I received 8 of each; 3 Wheatens and 6 Silvers made it to lockdown and now 1 and 5 have hatched.
The 5-week olds are moving outside today!

Adorable chicks Chestnutridge! My five week olds are still in the garage and will stay there until I can get some permanent housing arranged outside. The poults are growing like weeds and I know I have at least one tom in the mix. He does his display and yesterday he was trying to mate one of the other poults who was resisting. He was not being very nice about it either little stinker. From the NYD hatch I am down to just a pair of lav orps. They are in with the older chickens but they pretty much just hang together. I saw the cockerel mating the pullet yesterday so she must be getting ready to lay soon. Since the cockerel seems to be a nice boy, I might have to keep him. He is getting big and pretty. I am glad I hadn't culled him yet. We will see how he gets along with my rooster. If they can stay out of each other's way, I will keep him. The Brahmas I hatched in March just crack me up. They definitely know what treats are and mob the gate and my feet when I go into their run. Love those guys. They are the friendliest chickens I have.

Well I am finally hoping for a sucessful hatch. My broodies all failed me. But I have a few hatches back to back set in the new Dickey's incubator/hatcher. However I am an idiot and spaced my first two hatches too close together. I thought I set them 5 days apart, but I set them 3 days apart. Which means instead if the first hatch having time to do their thing in the hatching tray before I had to open the door and lockdown the next batch I am supposed to be locking down the 2nd batch on day 21 for the first hatch. UGH!

So I'm not sure if I should go ahead and lock the 2nd batch down early or late. HELP!!!

Here is my incubator so you know what the heck i am talking about. It has three turning trays and one hatching tray at the bottom.

Yikes, I am not sure which way to go. I would probably lock them all down at the same time, however, you will need to get in there to get out the hatched chicks at some point during the second hatches lockdown.

I have had two hatches in a row now that were a total bust, but I started using one incubator for incubating & the other for hatching. I thought it would be such a splendid idea, but two hatches in a row now & everything died in lockdown. I'm never moving them over to hatch in the other bator at lockdown again. I have an LG forced air and a Reptipro, and they are both great incubators as long as you start and finish the entire clutch within the same bator... I've had great success doing that! Thought I had the bright idea to use the Reptipro to incubate and the LG to hatch, but now TWO hatches in a row all died in lockdown??? I don't think I'll try it a third time.

Right now, however, I have a group in the Reptipro on day 8. The WFBS bantams were all clear except for one, but the large fowl WFBS (which I have been coveting since BEFORE I ever even got my first chicken) are doing great! Well, three out of 4 are doing great, and 1 has a crack (sealed with wax) but still has a chick embryo forming inside, so I am hopeful it will fully develop and hatch. It has been so hard to get my hands on WFBS chickens out here in California... NOBODY has them!
