Large Fowl Cochin Thread

Ok I have 2 questions. I have 2 9 week old cochin pullets. Both are already bright red in the comb and wattles. This has only happened in the last few days. Before that small and flesh colored. I have other hens that are different breeds and older. About 12 weeks. None are red yet. Today I found an egg in the nesting box that's from a new chicken. I don't know who. I'm thinking the cochins because they turned red so early but I've heard they don't lay this early. I'm also not certain they are large fowl. Any help here would be much appreciated? Thanks.

Definitely not the cochins, mine started around 7 months

Do they all start that late? I've heard of some chickens starting early but it's hard to say. I did yours turn red early or was it right before they started laying? Thanks.. :)

My cockerels turned red around 5 months, my hens turned at about 6. It depends on the breed, my leghorns start around 16 weeks, my barred rocks at 20-24 and the cochins at about 7 months

Can you post a pic? Are you sure that your 9 week olds are pullets?

The earliest I have ever had birds lay was 14 weeks and those were 4H pullet chain birds who are simply laying machines.

My breeder told me to expect LF cochins to begin at about 7 months as well.

I hatched these myself so I know they aren't cockerels. The boys were bright and red at 6 weeks. :)

Here are 2 at 6 weeks. You can see the difference and by 8 there was no guessing. We had 4 boys and 2 girls.

I'm positive they are pullets. I swear I'm the rooster queen lol. We hatched out almost 20 cockerels this summer. We are now down to 8. At this point I can tell the difference. I even double checked on the pullet or roo thread twice as they were growing.. all said pullet..
