Large Fowl Cochin Thread

My wife made the hotel reservations for Indy the day they became available. If gas isn't $5+ a gallon we plan on being there. It was a great show in '06 and it should be even better in '11. Went out three days ago and the better of the two partridge pullets I got from you had died. I believe she strangled to death on feed, this is rare but I have had it happen to two cockerels before. She wasn't sick and weighed about 9 lbs and was laying up to the day she died. Sure hated to lose her, she had very nice pencilling over the cushion and nice shape.
Got a few chicks hatching though and I have put the other male in with the other pullet now.

See you in Indy!!

Bo, have you crossed black ever with Partridge? What would be the result? As I understand it, partridge should be basically recessive to black, so in the second year (f2) you should get some pure partridge. Is that true? It seems to me that when I tried it a few years back, that is not what I got...

Usually isn't!

Sorry to hear about the pullet. I wish all my old hens would really start laying. I don't think all of them are going to lay this year. Getting a little long in the tooth

Haven't tried that cross, not sure of the partridge genetic makeup, I do believe they carry a extended black gene and a dark brown gene not sure what else or what the out come of a black x partridge cross would be. I have too many irons in the fire to try another cross right now. If that cross did work the type and size of the partridge could be improved greatly in a matter of a few generations. I am using them more for the dark brown gene but have also bred them pure to keep some around, I like the pattern.
I have a black hen that is 8 1/2 years old that just laid her first egg of this year! She is the only bird left of an original cross I used to develop my line of blacks. I'll put her with a good cockerel tomorrow and hatch all the eggs she lays, she is a very good hen that has never been beaten in her breed and she tends to produce birds of very good type and size. Hard to believe a large fowl hen can stay productive that long, I lost two of her sisters and a daughter this year due to old age, I will miss this girl when she is gone. Good genetics must be maintained and propogated for as long as they can be; everything on my place be it black, white or mottled can trace their foundation back to this old lady.

Hi! I have just adopted two Cochins "accidentally" but am now excited I did. I thought they were silkies! I think they are standards. I have a white one and another one that is dark in color and the feathers are coming in brown with black centers. Any idea what color my dark one will be as an adult?

i have been looking for a rooster for them for ages but the breeder that i bought
these from had a baby so she sold all of her chickens (without telling me)

While I do like bantams, I am a large fowl enthusiast to say the least. I think Forrest likes the fact we have the big birds and two of his favorites.

Bo...I love the fact that you have kept your great granny Cochin all these years and that she still lays! I know many breeders will get new stock every 3 years but I never like to part with my favorite birds so thanks for confirming that I don't have to! Im going to use the rolling method with my birds, and I can't wait to see how these newly hatched Chicks grow out. I'd like to add a blue and splash hen to my trio when I run across some nice ones. I haven't found anyone close by and would rather not order hatching eggs.

I have noticed that both bantam and LF partridges are a little smaller that other colors. Is it my imagination?

Ooh I'm so excited to see this thread! I have a quad(trying to start small but.....we all know how that goes) of LF cochins and I love them! I have two blues and two splashes. I bought them as 4ish week old chicks and they are growing out beautifully(I think). I would love to post some pics and get some opinions of them so I don't make a fool of myself at a show.
