LARGE hornets nest-HELP!!!!PICS ADDED

Around my parts, folks advertise that they will come get the nest for free.

I did this years ago when I had a nest in a tree.

Guy came out at night and covered the nest with a garbage bag. He then froze the nest and bees that does kill the bees.

He then sells them to a lab.

If you don't have anyone locally that does the same. I'd just go out at night with the garbage bag and then stick the bag away from the house.

I don't like to use chemicals either.

For those concerned about the health of world wide bee populations, most bees are doing fine. Honey bees are a concern. Wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets are not bees and have healthy populations.

I learned as kid, taking a hornets nest I found in the woods in the dead of winter into my room, that freezing does not necessarily kill the little beasts. That was one of those cold Wisconsin winters. Fortunately I made my new scientific discovery while a few the demons were lethargically crawling around on the floor and not after they had livened up a bit.

These, like most critters, are beneficial. They are predatory and take the bite (pun intended) out of many undesirables. Just too dangerous (particularly hornets) to keep in the yard.

The last time I was stung by a wasp, I ended up in the hospital after jabbing myself with my Epipen. I just don't have sympathy for insects that can kill me.

Paper nest wasps are not pollinators.

If they are paper nest wasps then I would tightly roll a news paper and put it in the end of a metal pole. Light the end of the newspaper (that has been doused in lighter fluid, if needed) and then LIGHT IT UP!

I don't think these sound like pollinators, but if they are then please don't kill them.

If you have a "scientific body" around that would come and harvest them then please do that.

Otherwise, burn baby burn! No chemicals to hurt our kids.

I've been told that if you can find ants nearby, and make a yummy trail of honey or something up to the wasp nest they will take care of it for you. My friend said the yellowjackets were flustered because their kids were being eaten and they couldn't stop it. They let a FEW yellowjacket nests stay around because they catch flies.

Yay for ants! (this time)

For a big nest, attached to the coop, I vote for bagging it at night and destroying it, unless you find a pro. If you seal the bag tight they should expire eventually. Can they chew through a heavy duty bag???

Fire can be fun, but too much risk for the chickens!

Wow! You guys are great. Thanks for all the responses. I will get a picture and try to get it posted. The last time I tried to post pictures of my chicks I couldn't figure it out. Anyway, the nest actually wraps around the back corner of the shed. There is no way to wrap a bag around . The idea of torching it scares me since it is under the corner of the shed roof. This really sucks. I guess I will try the canned cat food and comet. Has anyone else ever heard of this?
Thanks so much everybody!!!!
Kathy

P.S. If the cat food doesn't work maybe I will try the mint oil

You could do something brilliant like a guy I used to work with.... After much thought he decided the best way to get rid of the hornet's nest in his woodshed would be to wait until dark and shove the nozzle of his shop vac into the opening. According to him this worked fine for a little while until the suction caused the walls of the nest to collapse which (in his words) left him with 10,000 angy bees staring at him. Lucky for him he was only stung about a dozen times...... After we all finished rolling on the ground laughing so hard we practically wet our pants I asked him what he was planning to do with a vacuum cleaner full of 10,000 angry bees.... He informed us he'd thought that part out thoroughly and had sprayed the canister full of bee spray prior to activating the vacuum.
HERE"S YOUR SIGN!!!!!!!!!
