large soft lump on all my chickens neck at the bottom right!

I have noticed a lump on one of my chickens, Googled it and found you guys. After reading the posts I decided to join up. It is great to know there is advice and support from people who have experience with chickens as I am fairly new to it.

Hi, I just lost a chicken this moring. It had a round lump that looked like it had hair sticking out on one side of the neck. She looked weak and I pick her up, and she was having trouble breathing, then I put her back down and was going to come in and ask you for advise as to what it could be and she died. Her head went down and she was gone. Was that her crop? was it blocked? And what type of gravel do you use? just from the ground? or can you purchase it? Please advise. ( the lump was round and about the size of a nickel and she had trouble and was gasping for air, I noticed her yesterday she was smaller then the rest of them, and just looked small in conparsen to the rest and was just laying down all the time.

I'm sorry for your loss. If you still have the body you can refrigerate it and send it off for necropsy, that is often the best way to determine what happened. I will post a couple of links at the bottom of this of resources for that and there is a good thread on here of how to package for shipping. There are many possibilities for what may have happened to your bird, so without more information it would be guessing. If you can post a picture of the 'lump' and showing exactly where it was it may help determine what that was, but it may or may not have been a contributing factor.
You can purchase poultry grit where ever you purchase feed usually. It's normally crushed granite. Grit should be available to them at all times. Some environments have enough that they can find it themselves, but to be safe I'd just have a separate feeder or dish with it available all the time. It's not very expensive. They will take what they need. They need the grit to grind up their food in the gizzard. Not having enough grit can contribute to blockages. If the 'lump' was in fact her crop, and it was impacted, that could account for weight loss and weakness as she would have been slowly starving. Lack of grit could have been a cause, but there can be other reasons for impactions. Again, these are just guesses/suggestions as I can't examine the bird.
