large soft lump on all my chickens neck at the bottom right!

i have 8 rhode island red/white hybrids and they have all got a large soft lump at the base right of the neck is this normal or not? can anyone help???????

* That's their crop, where the hold the food you feed them after they eat. From there it goes to the gizzard where it gets ground up with the help of grit. The crop is a pouch kind of like the super-expandable cheek pouches on a hamster. When the food moves down the lump will go away. It can be flat, small, large and soft, or very large and hard, depending on how much they stuff themselves.

I agree with d.k. its their crop. They are perfectly normal. It will get full and sometimes be less full depending on how much they have eaten.

This is normal and nothing to worry about, it just means they have eaten recently. That bulge is their crop, where they grind up their food at for further digestion.

I have a 6 month old chick i saw same thing thought the worst , and now this info helps explain the lump but she also is weak she is not growing and she is half the size of the other chickens her same age but she eats like there is no tomorrow great appetite, but sleeps allot and seems very weak. she is a leghorn and really giot attached to the kids she had respiratory infection shortly after i gave her tylan 50 three days small dose because of size and it cleared up. she was fine few weeks. i am wondering if she has a parasite or maybe worms.

I am having the same issue we had 6 chickens and we lost one to a raccoon and we still have 5 a few days ago we noticed one of the chickens seemed very weak and it sleeps a lot. I am concerned about it. we seperated it. it has been by itself of close to a week and it seems to me that she is getting even weaker she is not eating a whole lot and the same with the drinking. I would move her wings and she would not fix them they would just hang there. Does anyone have any advise thank you

You'll need to provide more information before anyone can help

What kind of food are you using? How are the chickens housed? Are they in a run or free range? What other symptoms are they experiencing? How long has this been going on? How old are they? etc

Eight chicks, all about 4-5 weeks old, marans, Orpingtons, & Cochins. I have been alternating medicated & non-medicated starter. In a brooder box with pine shaving at night & outside in a 'playpen' on grass during the day. Recent treats: cucumbers, apples (minus seeds) run through the food processor, scrambled eggs, soft corn tortillas. One chick I thought was suffering from heat stress & I brought her inside & gave her electrolytes. I noticed dark liquid stool. I was worried about cocci so I put everyone just on medicated starter, kept that chick separate & on electrolytes, and cleaned the brooder box. Her stool is looking better so I am hoping it was just the heat. But now I am worried about everybody's crop!
The heat here is terrible. With the humidity, the heat index is well over a 100 degrees. I will never get babies this late in the season again! I think it is just too much for their little bodies to cope.

It probably the crop. Make sure they have gravel you can purchase. I mix it in with their feed. Some folks just set out a pan of gravel for them. I lost a hen last year to sour crop. I don't know if she had eaten something like a piece of string or plastic I have no idea but no matter what we did it was always a temporary fix. A little Oregano in their water helps them too, acts like a natural antibiotic I was told .. but they love it. hope this helps.
