hi, I just noticed this large wound on my hen's back. It wasn't there this morning. My question is could the rooster have done this? And, will it heal on its own? I've separated her from the flock as the others were pecking at it. I'm not sure what else I can do for her... any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Looks like a predator attack. I don't think a rooster could have done that... I would definitely keep her separate, and keep the wound clean. Do a saline flush and then just keep it clean and it will probably heal up on its own. Take her out to see the flock every day so that they don't forget about her and then you will have to reintegrate her when she is healed. Good luck, i hope this helps!

Yeah, she's separate. I have her in a small portable coup thing my mom had. Would it be smart to put that in the run to help remind the flock of her and maybe also for safety? If this was a predator the coup she's in would be pretty accessible...

that would not be the best to happen is it possible to keep her in a secure area but away from the others.. do you have blue coat.... the look it may have been a rooster like a spur

Unfortunately, I don't have any where else to put the coup she's in that would be more secure. I have dogs so my house and yard aren't safe and we don't have a garage or anything. I don't have a coat but saw them online and I might order one

Do you think your dogs did it? What keep be of predators do you have around your home?:hugs

I doubt the dogs did. Their yard isn't close to the chicken run and I don't think they'd escape and then go back in. We have bobcats, birds of pray (hawks, owls) coyotes and the occasional raccoon. This happened during the day though. My best guess is maybe a neighbor dog came in the yard and stuck it's head under the fence and got her but, or the rooster, but I'm not sure
