I don't know, of course, HOW OLD the chicks I got from the feed store were exactly, but certainly no older than a week. They are now approximately 11 weeks old...looking almost grown!

I mention this because when I got them I merely put them in an outside pen with a 250 Watt heat lamp about 2 feet above them in one corner of the pen. They moved closer or further away from the heat AS THEY PLEASED.

They all did fine. 16 Black Sex-Link chicks - all pullets.

I KNOW that you could not do this in your HOT area at this time of year...TOO HOT ! Anytime other than Summer though, you could do this also for a brooder. When I did this, our nights did not get colder than 40 F.

I wouldn't be able to do this after about Oct 1-15 however. Nights get too cold beginning about then.......

Bruce I did the same thing with my first chicks from the feed store except I had the heat lamp over a dog crate in the coop I think at 4 weeks they where roosting and no longer staying in the crate/hence great minds! haha! i wish i could do that now except at 4 weeks I have to put them in a 4x4x4 Kennel solid top for shade and shade screen all the way around a large wooden shelter inside the size of large kennel which I put a frozen milk jug in every day at noon they love it hudle around it during hot part of day/a large water tub about 4" deep so they can take a dip in and they do/a waterer i clean and fill 2x a day whew what work/will transfer them to their coop in 2 more weeks they will be 8 weeks then the next batch will go in the kennel and so on.

Yep, I know what you mean!
Im sure I mentioned that I once lived in Phoenix for 3 years.NEVER DID get used to the HEAT !!! (Moved to Colorado to "cool-down"....it must've taken me a while to cool down 'cause I stayed in Colorado for 21 years! Ha-Ha!

Here, although I have window refrig units, I just use fans and the overhead fan to cool the house. Outside, I stay in the shade for the most part!

By the way 8 hatched chicks is REAL GOOD! I was planning to start some Black Giants about NOW, but a vet bill delayed that project for a month. Still planning on getting the eggs from PamsPride IF she has some when I do it!

Yes I am happy with the 8 out of 13 if I could do math i would tell you my percentage but i can't! I am going to get some from Wynette also to breed BBS JG's/I am also playing with a LB/JG cross for fun. Going to buy a Dickie Bator in the spring/then the fun begins with my own eggs cant wait!I will have BO's & LB's & GC's & JG's & my original Feed store flock!
