So we turned on the lamp last night to see what kind of temperature we were dealing with and the thermometer on the side of the tank wouldn't get above 90 degrees. Now mind you, under that lamp it felt ROASTING but I'm not a baby chicken. I'm going to buy a regular thermometer today and set it down under the lamp to see what happens to the temperature.
Now my first question is, the aquarium that we're using is quite large. I believe it's 50-80 gallons. We've got the lamp on one side of the aquarium but of course once you get away from the lamp the temperature drops considerably, should I be blocking off one half of the aquarium for now to keep them from wandering into the "cold zone"?
I'm seeing all this debate now as well about the use of a 250 watt red bulb. That's what I bought, that's what we planned to use but now between people debating it's effect on chicks and/or the potential for FIRE. I'm concerned. Something about melting bulbs and such...good grief. Is this bulb going to be alright?
One more, I promise. I read and heard to use newspaper for the first few days on top of the shavings, but I also heard not to (leg issues and such). I was thinking of just using paper towels on top of the shavings, assuming of course that they're not going to set on fire!
Please help me, I'll stop being annoying eventually.
Wish me luck at 2pm today!
