So I hatched my first flock. Today would be day 27 but I turned off the incubator yesterday morning. Then one more egg hatched today. My house is at 68 degrees. My roommate told me when I came home in the evening, so we have no idea at what time it hatched. I turned the incubator back on immediately to get it's temperature up. It dried out and I put it in the brooder. It seems super sleepy...more sleepy than the others were. So, hopefully it does well through the night. Nothing I read said anything past day 24. I left the incubator on all through day 25 and into 26. Lol. Has anyone else had this happen? Good thing I didn't clean the incubator out right away!

Treat this chick like a preemie. it is cold. That's why it's sleepy it's using its reserves just to stay warm instead of maturing. it needs supplemental heat direct supplemental heat . make a small tent out of a heating pad .put polartec underneath the pad where the chick will be .warm any fluids you give the chick. Give it Bovidr Labs Poultry Nutridrench Labs .one drop by mouth. repeat every 8 to 10 hours until perky.
Best,
Karen

Thanks so much! Where do you buy the poultry nutridrench supplement? I've got the rest of it pretty much covered. I figured it was more tired because of the temperature issue. Nothing I read suggested they could hatch that late. I feel bad. It's not exactly perky yet, but is lively enough to try and get away if I touch it, and has moved around a few times. I guess for now, I will try with the warmed liquid.

This might sound silly, but would it help to feed it room temperature yolk from store bought quail eggs? If I can't find the supplement quickly?

Yes! They are bobwhite. It's supposed to be day 23-24, so maybe it's not as nuts as I originally thought...

I just hadn't read anywhere about stragglers, I guess, and was not expecting that.

The rest hatched basically on time. The first one on day 23, and entire day before 3 others, and then 12 hours later one more. So then 3 days later...and I am just really glad I didn't clean it out right away...

Anyway, good news. It's up. It's almost as perky as the others, AND the others seem to be trying to care for it, and circle it protectively when I reach my hand in. So that's kind of cool and sweet.

Thank you for the links. I'll definitely have it handy in case that ever happens again.

How long would you wait for coturnix after the supposed hatch day?

If I knew the temperature was right, I would give it until around day 21 or 22. As long as things didn't smell. I don't candle mine or remove any during incubation, so I am always going to have some that won't hatch.

If I was suspicious that the temperature was low then I might give a little longer. But not much. Might get exploding eggs.
