Class hatch update:
Thanks Chicksooner! We are still hatching on day 23. We had 2 out of the shell yesterday, 2 last night and another 2 this morning. I can see 4 that have pipped and too many that haven't. I think we are coming to the point that we have to decide if we help or not..... I thought you should never help them, but have been learning there are two very definite camps both with valid points. If I were to help them, we don't have a good set up to help them, no extra heat or humidity source to use while I work on them like I would at home. I don't know what to do.
We have a foam incubator that hasn't been the most reliable this go around, and I'm thinking some may be stuck. I have had 3 that I could see their little beaks poked out and breathing all day with no progress. One started to unzip a few hours ago and seems to be doing fine. One has a little blood, so I know he's not ready to come out yet. I just checked again. I don't see his mouth moving anymore, it's just open. I'm pretty sure he didn't make it. I'm not sure about the other, his mouth is still moving as he breathes. I can hear someone peeping loudly, but not sure who. It's none that I can see and every so often, I hear the tap, tap, taping of someone working on her way out. This has been the longest most drawn out hatch I have ever had. We have been going for 3 days and still don't seem to be done. The family we are hatching them for is supposed to be here to pick them up tomorrow night, but I'm not even sure if they will be done hatching by then or not. I'm exhausted. Who knew there was so much drama just hatching a few eggs in class? I guess anyone who has ever done it before. =) I know it is all worth in. All of my students are learning so much and I am too, it's just so nerve wracking.
