Lathargic Barred Rock

I am home from our trip to town. The store had Wazine. They did not have any wormer of any kind for goats/sheep only horses in syringes. I did buy the wazine but I talked to DH and he said to wait and we will try to find the liquid wormer somewhere. I was going to buy a scale and something to 'tube' water in the birds if needed in future but no such luck. They did have and I bought something called Duramycin-10. It was advertised as an antibiotic. I thought if that is what is was it would be good to have on hand.

SO.....I have Wazine but no Safeguard. I will have to call around tomorrow to find it. If I am dosing each bird individually what should I use? A syringe? I am assuming the dosing will be by weight, correct? Do I need to clean coop after worming? Tossing eggs obviously. And when to do second round?

I am sure you all answer these questions all the time. I will try to look up some posts on it. Thank you all for your help. I know, baby step these newbies along and before ya know it we can pass along what we have learned from you to hopefully help others.

perhaps a dumb question here but I am reading many posts that talk about an equine paste de wormer. Would that be what the farm store had in the syringes? Would that be something I could use?

A pea size amount of paste given one day will treat roundworms and *maybe* cecal worms, it will not treat capillary worms. A medium pea size amount only contains about 25mg Fenbendazole.

I had read about people using horse wormer to worm their birds, and I've always wondered how much Safeguard or Panaur (fenbendazole 10%) paste one should use, so i decided to do some weighing and math. As it turns out, you would give the same amount of paste as you would the liquid. For example, if you usually give a bird one ml (cc) of the liquid, you would give one ml (cc) of the paste.

Do you have any idea how many mg's of wormer are in a "pea size" amount? Well I was curious, so I measured it.

From left to right:
Small = 10mg (0 .1ml)
Medium = 25mg (0.25ml)
Large = 50mg ( 0.5ml)

Pictures:

Weighed empty 6cc (ml) syringe

Filled with Panacur 10% paste and weighed. Difference is 6 grams, so 6 grams = 6cc's (ml)

ml = cc
Safeguard = Panacur
0.1ml = 1/10 cc (ml)
0.25ml = 1/4 cc (ml)
0.5ml = 1/2 cc (ml)

A small update:

Friday the 23rd (a few days from my original post and about a week after first noticing the sick hen) after much running around, we found all the supplies we needed for orally dosing the flock for worms. We had the scale set up with the wormer and syringes and all. Husband and I went into coop (it was late and all were roosting) and I couldn't believe what I was hearing!! Coughs and sneezes and all sorts of noises that I hadn't heard before. I had a coop of sick birds with something clearly respiratory. DH and I talked it over and we held off on the worming because we didn't want to overload them with the wormer when they were obviously not well. We decided we were going to try to find a vet. After many phone calls (almost 2 days!! ) I found a vet today who does poultry an hour away from us. I will attempt to bring in one of the sickest hens in the next day or two. I was advised by this office that we should probably be tossing the few eggs we are getting since we do not know what they are sick with. I noticed the eggs have pale yolks and runny whites. The shells feel thinner but not wrinkled like with infectious bronchitis. DH was wondering if we should be using them or not.

One of the vet offices I called that didn't do poultry suggested I use BYC for help. Told her I was already here!! She said a lot of the vets she knows will go here for information since there are a lot of "serious birders on BYC"! Ha Ha funny I thought!

I have spent many more hours researching and reading up on the various respiratory illnesses to hopefully educate myself. I will update after our vet visit.
Thanks everyone.

Hope you find answers, I replied to your post early on about my sick lethargic hen, she passed away Monday evening. So sad :( None of my other hens are showing any signs of sickness.

Best of luck to you. looking forward to hearing what the vet has to say.

@farminchick-sorry to hear about your hen! It is good to hear that no one else is showing symptoms. It is never easy losing our chickens that we have put so much time and effort into! Hope your flock stays healthy!!

I found this poo today :(
Am I dealing with coxi?
