Send her with Paul
Yeah, then I'd only have to illegally sneak her into Texas.

Some fresh pics. They aren't all looking their best this time of year. The roo is lavender cuckoo, that's why he is so light. The juveniles were all busy in the woods, while the adults were helping with the hop harvest. :)

Hello. I have a trio of lavender Ameraucanas, but I'm planning to use them in a Isabelle color project in the spring. Someone was working on this color, but the "blog" and thread postings, etc. seem to have died out in 2010. Don't know if they quit or the project just didn't work out. Anyone else using the lav gene to dilute the wheaten?

Here are my guys...from Shaffer lines.

She is still working on the lav wheatens. She pops in on the Ameraucana thread every once in a while.

I do have a bit of bad news for you.... those are not Wheaten Ams.... they are EE. Wheatens don't have white feathers. Wheatens should have blue or black feathers in the tails and on the wings some, but you don't really see that unless you spread their wings. I don't have a good picture of my pullets. Also the one in the front has no beard and that is a DQ so I would not use her. I had an EE and I was CONVINCED that she was wheaten without a beard for MONTHS, she was part wheaten as she was sired by a NonStandard Blue Wheaten roo, but she was not wheaten. I loved the look soooooo much I willed myself into believing she was wheaten. Once you see one in person you will never mistake them again. Wheatens were the HARDEST for me to figure out. Still takes me a little while to sex the chicks...... still learning.

Good to know that the project wasn't a failure.

My bad on the wheaten pullets...they are BLUE wheatens. What you are seeing in the picture as white is actually a very pale grey/blue. The picture quality is a bit light on the lavenders too. The lower pullet does have a beard/muff, but it's very sparse. I'm hoping that it will improve with age. She's about 14 weeks according to the breeder, the pullet behind her is a month older. Neither is POL yet. She was selling their daddy too, he was a beautiful blue wheaten. Don't need anymore roos though

I'm also searching for some (black) Wheaten eggs/chicks/youngsters too, but being in Virginia makes my selections very limited. It seems very few people are willing to fill out the forms required by my state even though all that is needed for eggs and day old chicks is an annual permit application (NO fee) indicating the breeding stock are NPIP/AI clean. Adult chickens are much more complicated.

Quote: The only difference in Blue Wheaten and Wheaten is the BLACK in the tails and wings are BLUE. You pullets are not marked properly for wheatens. They don't have any Color in the tails. Maybe someone else can chime in, but I am 99.9999% sure those are EE. I can't tell you how many people I have seen claim their EE to be wheaten.....one poor lady on the Ams thread was showing off her wheaten chicks. Her roo was a wheaten, but her hens looked more like yours and she came to the conclusion that they were EE even though they were sold to her as wheatens. They were not breeding true like wheatens either.

This was my EE/ Wheaten look alike.... see the white in her tail? that should be Black or Blue in a wheaten ( a splash wheaten might look like my EE). See how dark her color is.... wheatens are like that more of a buff color all over. Even if my pullet was a pure Wheaten (and she may very well have been she had wheatens too) the fact that she lacked a beard made her an EE as she didn't meet the standard for Wheaten Ams.

You would not want to use a Blue in the project you are wanting to start anyway. You need to stick with Wheatens only, so as not to muddy the water with the Lavs.

Thanks again DMRippy. I do appreciate your thoughts. The pullets really do have a very pale blue coloration. I suspected splash at first, but there are no "splash" pattern markers anywhere on the birds. There is a bit of darker grey along the quill in some of the tail feathers. I'm still planning to test breed since that is truly the only way to know for certain.

I agree that using blues could muddy the water, however, since my lavender came out of a line of black splits, I know he does not carry any blue. Breeding blue to black (base with double lav dilution) should give me 50% blue and 50% black, all split to lav. It is a simple matter to eliminate all of the F1 blue wheatens and work forward breeding the wheatens back to the pure (double dose) lav hens/roo. Using a splash would be more problematic, but I'll know that's what I've got if all I get is blue. Then it's back to square one. Same thing if these girls don't throw any wheatens.
