You have Blue Ameraucana not Lavender. It's been said earlier but I'll try to illustrate the difference. Genetics of blue and lavender are different. With blue two copies result in splash and one copy blue. Hence a splash bird mated to black results in all blue. Lavender begets lavender and are also called self blue.

There is confusion in people calling a blue bird without lacing Lavender. This is not true. A blue bird without lacing is merely a poor example of blue variety. Blue variety should always express lacing. But genetically speaking they are not self blue/ lavender. They are completely different gene.
This is A good example if I'm correct lacing is when the feathers have A different color at the tips of the feathers. In A lavender/self blue Ameraucana they have greyish plumage with lavender tips and splash have grayish feathers with splotches of blue or black almost like someone through blue paint at them. The first is lavender the second is slash

The biggest problem with self blue/ lavender Ameraucana is they have weak feathers in comparison to most of the other colors mine are in A molt and aren't much too look at but when they are full of feathers they are very good looking. I do prefer the lighter color birds white and wheaten Ameraucanas are my favorite but lavender is growing on me.

Is there any way to improve the Lav feathers that you know of?
I like them also and want better feathers in my flock.
Thanks for your time! :hugs

I have been trying out A feed by nutrina (nature wise feather fixer) I am looking into Seabuck 7. I do know that there feathers are around 85 to 90 % protein so A high protein diet with A good amount of greens like spinach and kale works good. I looked in natural things as well giving them boiled eggs and parsley is really high in protein twice A week no salt.

I'd be interested to know if you see any difference.

My lavender orpington flock and recent offspring are starting to look a little ragged too.

A way to improve feather quality is to breed black back into the line, then mate the splits. But that really doesn't help my current ones. So if the feed works, that would be great!

Protein is the best thing just be careful because most proteins also have high fat. Chopped boiled eggs twice a week is good. Sprouted chia and lentils have great proteins and no fat so as much as you want. Also parsley, dried mealworms, cat food, dried fish are good sources. Just remember fat. I am watching the feed with report on it in A month.

My whole flock eats meat maker pellets with 20% protein. My lavs feathers are weak but I only got her in May or June @ 5 months old. I wish she'd molt this winter so I could see if the new feathers are stronger but I know it's not likely. She's already pretty banged up from mating but she's very passive and let's everyone hop on lol. My sebright loved her and I think his scrambling, plus the heavy assertiveness of my Marans, did it, but they are both gone now.
