So, we got a lavender Orpington chick a few weeks ago. She is currently 3 weeks old and is living with an Easter egger hatched on a similar date. We are a little concerned about her since she is so small. I have heard that lavender Orpingtons are a slow feathering breed, but it still concerns me. She is small for a 3 week old chick and has bad balance. To add onto that, she falls asleep in our hands all the time. Other then that she eats and drinks normally. No bloody or runny stool at all. Are we just being paranoid or is there a real reason for concern?

It could be failure to thrive, or it's just a runt. Failure to thrive is a general term and can often be from some internal birth defect that eventually kills them. Things like improperly formed organs is probably the cause.

Runts often grow slower but hang on. Most stay smaller their whole lives.

Hard to say what's going on, or if nothing is going on. Not much you can do about it, except you could try some extra doses of poultry vitamins to see if it helps in case it's a deficiency.

Yeah. We just finished treating them with corid since one of our other chicks was pooping blood. We are gonna give them a day of regular water and then start them on vitamins just in case.

I have two lavender orphingtons. One grew at a normal rate. The other one looked like a baby chick until 6 weeks old! She just started to feather out. Her sister has all her feathers. Weird! But I know some are just slow growing.

😂 I love that phase. They always look (and act) like teenagers. Our jersey giant has it the worst.
