Lavender Orpington Roo or Hen?

I think so...I'm no expert when it comes to breeding. In fact I am no expert at all. This whole chicken experience is new to us, but we are thoroughly enjoying it. I think the woman we bought her from said she needed to breed the hens one more time before she would have "true" lavender orpingtons. I just love her anyway. I had never heard of Lavender Orpington's before, now I am quite interested in having a "true" one:) They are quite beautiful!

She looks like a cross to me. I've been breeding them for only two years, so I'm far from a expert! I don't know what she ment by breeding them one more time to be "true" lavender? She sure is pretty! I would want that color too!!

are you saying this is what a lavender color is? or is this a Lavender Orpington or Lavender cross? Maybe the hen with the long tail is a lavender/croos Orpingtons don't have long tails!

I'm not sure on sex, leaning towards pullet but the color looks blue. Most people breeding project lavenders to improve feather quality use the black orpingtons to cross with. The lavender gene dilutes red and black. All the chicks will be black "splits", carrying the recessive lavender gene. You need 2 copies of the gene to produce the lavender color. I'm not sure if she was crossing with blue orps or a different breed entirely.

I agree looks like a lighter blue. As for the gender looks male to me. Comb and wattle growth combined with how red they are. Yep male. Some of mine are about 19 weeksand they havent got nothin goin on up there.

Check out my lavenders on avatar....young roo with 2 young pullets. Picture was taken prob 6-8 weeks ago, I hatched these on April 4th. I'm thinking yours is more blue, very lovely color!

Well you may be right in saying she/he is a Blue. I have a Roo I bought from the woman that she said was a blue. I'll post pics. of him later today. Like I said, I don't know much about the genetics of chickens, I'm just relying on information of others who have been in the "business" a little longer than I. One thing I do know though...I LOVE Orpingtons! We bought a variety of hens from McMurray, and the Orpingtons by far are our favorites. We have a sweet little Orpington hen (Lois) who just loves to follow us around, and occasionally will jump up in our lap and just sit for a while. Who knew chickens could be so fun!
