Lavender Orpington Thread

Pics
I just put in a Lavender Orpington rooster this week that I'd gotten for FREE in with my hens and he is so pretty. He took to my flock so well and I was wondering how my girls who'd been without a male for about six months and it seems that they are all doing just fine. I have five EE's and I'm building them a 20' by 40' run next weekend. I'm hoping to breed my roo and if I can get more lavs it would be cool. Until then, I'll be happy with my EE's. I'll also be getting brown leghorns in the spring so it should be interesting to see how the breeding works out.

False alarm!
I thought my nearly 7 month old Lav Orps were laying, but it turns out it's really my 3 1/2 month old Red Sex Link!

No wonder the eggs aren't fertile, she's still a tiny little thing.
My Marans' eggs that are the same age as the Lav Orp have the bulls eye fertile mark in them, but the silly girl hides them all over the yard and I can barely find them and lately when I do they are frozen solid!

So glad to see this forum for Lavender Orpingtons. I have Buff and am trying to find Lavender hens and Rooster but it has been a work in progress. Florida just doesn't seem to have breeders that sell them unless they are day old or eggs. I was wondering if anyone knew if the Temperament is about the same as the Buffs. My hens are wonderful. They are so calm as well as good layers. They are about five months old now. How about the Roosters? I have an Easter Egger and he has to be watched. He is doing his job protecting the hens for sure.

I've found my lavenders to have the exact same temperament as my buffs did. Very personable and friendly. And so far I've had nice roos. You can pick them up without much fuss and they are always underfoot. We did handle them a lot as babies so they're very use to us. I'm sure you could come across a nasty orpington, but I haven't yet so far. I've always been picky where I bought my stock too. Usually with the buffs. I just started getting into the lavenders. But so far so good. That's why they're one of my favorite breeds :) Especially with kids. Hopefully you're able to find some there in Florida. Or maybe have a pair or trio shipped to you in the spring?
