Lavender Orpington Thread

How cute! I love they way she looks!
We have a white Easter Egger named "Princess Lay-a" and a "Bantam Menace" (orig named Cookie but her nickname is more appropriate.) She's our only tiny hen.
LOL, I'm TOTALLY stealing Bantam Menace if either of my Bantam eggs (which were shipped & I have little hope for) hatch out. We have a Gold Laced Polish named Chewbacca, a Buff Laced Polish named Binks (my son wanted to name him something not very politically correct for 'special' so I told him to think of the most 'special' character he had ever seen on tv; he came up with Jar Jar Binks LOL), and if any of my other hopeless shipped eggs hatch I'm pretty sure there will be a Wicket & a Queen Amidala in the group. Maybe even a Jawa :).

Yes, you should keep the theme alive with names like:
Chew-BAWK-a (or Chick-bacca)
Hen Solo
Luke Skywattle
Darth Layer
Yolka
* must mention that I did not come up with all of these

Star Wars is pretty main stream, so people know what you're talking about. It's the Xena names that add the geeky flair. Our worst is a hen named Tyrion from Game of Thrones. She was the smallest chick & had the personality of a rooster by not only holding her own, but also pecking at our 100 lb dog at only 2 weeks old. We thought for sure that she was a boy & didn't believe it when she laid an egg. Now she's the fav of all our guests. While all the hens are literally "chicken," she's fearless & will take treats right out of the hands of strangers. Last week my students had a picnic in my backyard. Tyrion actually jumped up into a girl's lap & pecked at the opposite side of the sandwich as the poor girl was trying to eat. (It didn't help that other students were throwing bread crusts toward the chickens.) Gotta love all those personalities.

Has anyone bought lavender chicks from Chicken Scratch Poultry? If so how hard are they to sex? Mine are 3 weeks old and most of them look the same with regard to comb, waddles, feathering and legs. Fearful I might be rooster heavy.

OK let me try that again... LOVE LOVE LOVE! What gen is he? Just loving the coloring... how often do you split out for type?

At 16 weeks, my lav orp roo (Tank) has not yet tried to crow. There are no other roos. Is this normal? Could the older hens be preventing him? There are no fights, but he certainly stays clear.

My only other roo started crowing around 8-10 weeks and by 4 months old he could be heard all day long over 2 blocks away. (We no longer have this loud & frequent crower.) Not that I want Tank to be loud, I just want to know what he'll sound like to determine if he should stay or go. If the adult hens are bullying him, will he ever grow up to mate & lead the flock?

Diva is our first Lavender. He was born on January 30th, only one out of 8 eggs.
He is English [Hink JC] and American Lavender. He is finally very well built and tall.

Here he is at 7 Months.

Oddly enough, he isn't our best looking Lavender.
Hansel, Our English Lavender [Hink JC/Greenfire], has way better coloring, size and type. But don't tell Diva that.

We were very, very fortunate with our Lavenders. Hansel just turned 6 months yesterday.
Gretel, our English female, has the best coloring out of the 3.

She is truly beautiful and is laying an egg (medium/large-sized) a day right now.
We are currently getting ready to set some eggs and are keeping our finger crossed.

WOW! Gretel sounds & LOOKS amazing.

At what age did your roos start crowing?

Here's my quiet boy, Tank.
