Lavender Orpington Thread

Pics
Hi,

I would like to join in. The short story is we have one hen Collette, and one rooster Ricky that we hatched out last May 17Th, here they are all grown up. They are the best!!!!! We have some eggs in the incubator due to hatch May 4Th, and we are rotating out eggs to put under Collette when she goes broody again. We are so excited, these chickens think they are people and no matter what they are doing will always come running when they hear us go outside. Rocky is the best rooster ever, he is gentle with everyone including Collette, but what really endears him to me is, anytime I do anything in the coop he goes in first to inspect and "fix" the nesting box all the while talking to her, then he gets out and she goes in and lays her egg. Oh, how we hope and pray to get some more hens. Collette pretty much lays an egg a day, even in the winter. She has gone broody twice, but we never let her hatch any as every time she went broody we had already taken all the eggs.

This is our first time trying to hatch our own eggs using her and an incubator. We were not really sure how with only her to get enough eggs, but thankfully for this site, we learned what to do. We keep collecting the eggs storing them in our basement( instead of eating them) and rotating them out before 7 days, so no telling how things will turn out. We only put 4 in the incubator and will probably just put 4 under her. It is hard to believe that these eggs are theirs as this is what we hatched them out in last year. My daughter did all the research and picked out Lavender Orpingtons to hatch for her 10Th birthday, so we got 7 eggs and this little mini incubator and the rest is history.

Ricky i don't think anybody is home.
Then we wait.

How exciting Jnkbtd08!!! We have the same hatch day. This is our second time ever hatching, but our first time ever using our own eggs. It sure has been interesting and exciting. We will have to keep in touch once hatching day gets closer. We are new to all this, and I just can't seem to get the candling thing down, and then there is the rotating the eggs from the basement thing so I really don't know what our hatching rate will be. Last year we ordered from SC to NY 7 eggs and 3 hatched despite our many mistakes. So, we wait. So sorry about the ducks.

Here is my start of lavender cuckoo. Last year hatched. Winter was hard on his comb. I have some eggs incubating from him and some lavender hens. I have a source lined up for some English blacks to improve type I know I have a long way to go.

He looks nice! I am no breeder and such a chicken rookie so I may be in the wrong thread here, but hey anything I can learn is good. All I do know is that our two chickens have great temperaments which is so important as they and our two young kids, a dog, and a cat all free range.

I don't even know if they are the correct type, what do you think? I just hope her eggs hatch and we get hens. So, if you don't mind my ignorant question, what is a Cuckoo and how are they different from an Orpington? I am assuming that one breeds the English Orpingtons into the Lavender Orpingtons to get the fuller bodies, is that correct? Goodness, I can't imagine what size poop they must have.

Although, they are extremely beautiful.

Cuckoo is barring on a fast feather growth. Less distinct than barring. This is a orpington project color for me. I see someone selling lavender cuckoo imported English bloodline on eBay. The rooster looked lavender but the hen did not look cuckoo.
