Lavender Orpington Thread

Oh, they are so sweet. I wish I could help. I think you are right thought. I hope you continue to post some pictures as Megan's are a few weeks behind and I already notice a difference in their wing feathers. I am hoping to learn and pay better attention to these two to be able to tell before they crow.

Yay, I get to post to the Lavender Orpinnton thread!! For an early Mother's Day my wonderful, amazing husband got me 6 chicks.

It's been a crazy busy few weeks since then. My brother had built me a small coop/brooder (with poultry wire) and we lost 2 to a hawk. So we're down to 4. I'm trying not to keep any roos but I am suspecting at least one....
My daughter (3yo) just loves to help me with the "chickies" and we are having a blast so far. But of course there is still a full coop to build. I've really enjoyed seeing everyone's pictures and looking forward to our continuing adventure in poultry!

Chicks now...approximately 3 weeks (?)

These birds are just plain GORGEOUS! Hoping to get a couple next year. I read Orpingtons make good lap birds. Is this true in your experience? I would love to spend an afternoon with one of these girls nestled on my lap!

Below are the Lav Orp chicks we hatched. They are about 3 1/2 weeks old, and I am seeing some differences in their combs. Am I right in assuming that I have 1 female(#1) & 1 male(#2) -or can those differences change? The one with the bigger comb also seems to have less (or slower) feathering. When the photos were taken, chick 1 was peeping & looking around for its hatch-mates. These are my first orpingtons. I tried to get a few different angles.

I have been looking for hatching eggs, but none of the places I've checked so far had Lavender Orpingtons. Where did you get them? They're beautiful! What was your hatch rate?

My BO are very curious and friendly. but they don't like to be picked- up. They climb on my shoulder when I'm cleaning the coop and tolerate my petting, but they never go on my lap. I've read some threads where people had tamer birds. I guess it will depend on the individuals themselves, although I read some claims that hatchery birds tend to be more on the skittish side.

I am so sorry about the hawk! Megan really wants to let Collette hatch some of her own, and we do have Ricky to watch out for them, but I wonder how safe they would be as the two free range all day. (More like mooch free treats from us as they spend most of their day around the house.) I see Ricky chasing the birds and any other animal that may come on our land, so I know he would fight for them, but I would hate for anything to happen to him. Plus the chicks are so very small! Anyway, what I really wanted to say is not only do you have beautiful chicks, but the two of you are too! Enjoy, they are so much fun and change so fast!

I think the whole picking up is like you said, on the individual birds own personality, and whether or not it is being done constantly. I have read here that temperament is past from the rooster, not sure? I have also read about hatchery birds being more skittish too. I think it's a whole combination of things. Collette and Ricky hatched in our house and spent a great deal of time in the house then the garage, so they grew up around us, they are extremely friendly. Ricky knows his name and will come running, well both will come running anytime they see us. (They are more like dogs.) I would think though that if Collette hatched out her own, they would not be as friendly? It's so hard to know, because I have read a lot of threads where people spent a lot of time with the chicks, but then when they grew up the chickens were still skittish or their rooster attack them.

One of the reasons I went for Orpingtons was their docile personality. Since the kids are going to be a big part in the care of the chickens I wanted a nicer breed. The breed came highly recommended by everyone I talked to. These are our first Orps! Not sure about the lap bird part but they are very sweet with me and the toddler so far.

I have had a similar past experience where I raised chicks, were very tame and by the time they were fully grown it was like they had never been handled before. I think it depends a lot on the individual chicken and circumstances.
