Lavender vs. Self-Blue??

Hi there,
A while back, I was contacted by someone breeding lavender Orpingtons, maybe? The conversation was about the fact that the lavender silkies will have their qualifying meet this December to be added as a variety of silkie. The person I spoke with said that there are several other breed groups working on or actively breeding lavender and in the early stages of having it accepted in their breeds. These other breed groups feel quite strongly that the color be named "lavender" and NOT "self-blue".

What other breed groups are working on or actively working to have lavender added as a variety for their breed?

I will be working on the paperwork and submission documents for the lavender silkie, but would love to know how many other breed groups are working on this process, and get feedback regarding what you want them to be called.

Only in the US is the lavender variety called "self-blue" - at least as far as I know.
If you are working on a lavender variety for your breed, and feel strongly about it either way - I would love to know!

I have seen lots of lavender bantam cochins advertised and managed to hatch only one. I am picking up Lavender Ameraucana eggs this week, both bantam and large fowl. Also getting some Lav. Orp eggs, can't wait! Haven't heard of any other breeds but am interested to hear what others say!

I personally like the fact that they are referred too as lavender, as I think there would be too much confusion among the general public between Blue from BBS or Andalusion Blue, vs Self-Blue. I have actually seen auctions on Ebay where people have BBS cochins but advertise them as Lavender because they are clueless about the difference. They were referring to their splash as lavender...

I think this would happen more often if they were referred to as Blue vs Self-Blue. Just my opinion though!

I can't wait for Lavender to be a more accepted variety in many breeds!

I agree that self-blue and blue are confusing terms (and that's before you even think about "self-blue meaning something entirely different in other parts of the world). But there will be some difficulties getting the standards committee to agree to the name lavender when self-blue is already named--they ran into similar issues with chocolate and khaki.

I agree with Sonoran in that the difficulty is going to be getting the standards committee to agree to the name lavender.
Even IF it would get changed the other color that is going to be confusing for the new comers is Blue and Silver Blue. The only thing that is different in the two varieties is that in Silver Blue has Hackles that are laced in Silver..

I think it all boils down to doing the homework.

I was contacted by the Ameraucana club regarding this issue for the NSBA, as they are doing Lavender Ameraucanas, and they were wanting all the breed clubs to be on the same page for the naming of the color. I referred them to the ASBC because the NSBA is just a small private club and ASBC is the main one regarding silkies. You might want to contact them as well.

I prefer the term lavender. I have lavender silkies, and apparently lavender orpingtons ( I bought them because they were cute, then the guy at the swap told me they were from hink jc. when will cuckoo silkies have a qualifier, I have some and love them.

The Cuckoo still have a little bit of work left to do yet! In order to qualify there has to be 5 breeders that have been breeding that variety for 5+ years. The variety has to breed true by 50% and at the qualifying meet there has to be 40 shown! So its getting close but I thin we still have a few years to go before they will be exepted!

I strongly agree the Self Blue and Blue thing is too confusing and Lavender fits the color variety better anyway! The name lavender has caught on pretty quick and now even the breeds that have the color listed as Self Blue, people are now calling them lavender!

I raise lavender orpingtons, and have lavender bantam cochins in the bator. I would like to see the term lavender over self blue. To me, the lavender color doesn't even look blue, more gray if anything....
