I'll be a dissenting voice. I had a RIR hen who OD'd on grass clippings and got an impacted crop which required surgery. My other girls were fine so it may just be an isolated incident but I would keep an eye on them for the first day and if their crops are getting too big, restrict their intake of clippings.

I always give mine the clippings. They go nuts. Since they have no grass in their runs because they eat every little sprout that trys to grow. So I provide them with clippings and they get in it and spread it out. It has never rotted. What they don't eat just dries up and crumbles away. When they scratch around in it, it gets spread out.

but what about lawnmower stuff?

Yes I give them all the lawn cuttings (clippings or whatever you want to call them)

We're needing to buy a new push mower -- my hubby is going to

when I suggest getting a style with a bag option so I can go mow part of the pasture for the chicken run!

Either someone planted the pasture for hay at some point or the seeds have blown from the cow's pasture across the street but there are lots of cereal grasses growing out there. I'd think it would be great stuff but it's too far for them to range plus that's where the hawks nest.

I just wish I had grass to cut.

Texas is in a severe drought right now. Last week when my husband did mow it was just dust and thistles! Please send us some rain!!

My chickens line up at the fence when I mow the grass waiting to get the grass I throw in while I'm mowing. They will actually walk alongside the mower waiting to see what grass flies in at them.

That was my question! We have weeds in our grass, and in years past, we have fertilized once, maybe twice a year. I assume (but don't know for sure) that it's not safe to give them those clippings. Is there a way to fertilize (or otherwise get rid of dandilions and goatheads) and be able to feed them the clippings, like waiting a month or something? Not fertilizing would be easier

, but we really only have the front for clippings, and that is what we fertilize.

Now in the back, we have weed issues. I need to pull out what's left, because we used Roundup last fall on those and they are dead but still in the ground. I have seen some sites that have very large and comprehensive plant toxicity lists. Unfortunately, if they don't have pictures, I'm not sure what they are.

Does anyone know if goatheads are not good for chicks?

TIA!
