I only have 2 chickens at the moment, so ill prob just use 1 garbage bag, ill supply lots of grit and water and normal food. Im going to confine them until the construction in our house is dont.. because they go into the garage and bother us, and poop on everything and eat the cats food! lol

My girls go nuts over grass clippings. My son makes sure to pick up dog poo

before mowing.

someone just told me that when picking at live grass and plants, chickens will take off small bites...it's when they eat hay and stuff they cannot control the size of that impacted crops can happen. Do you guys think lawn clippings are too long for them? Any problems with impacted crops from lawn clippings?

Oh my!! You should be here when my girls see me coming with lawn mower clippings! They love them. I think it is because they have bugs in them too. Like a bonus prize. lol

I didn't know where to post this but I'm curious what if you have a big enough run would your chicken be free ranging then just in a protective setting?? I somewhat know what free range is maybe? I plan on convert my shed into a coop and build a run next to it, what I'm planing probably won't be big enough to consider free range size. To my understand what free range is that they go an forage for food in your yard without you providing much feed for your chickens? If this is right I plan on letting the flocks good out of the run during the day and herd them back before dark.

Hope this makes sense, because before I start construction I want to make sure I build it big enough. The reason is one thing I noticed is what people would do different is make it bigger. I would say my run would be a 15x10 or so ,and the coop is going to be 8x8 about. how many chicken would I fit there? Maybe I just want to be clear on what the free range is? What's the point of the run( protection?)

Free range is letting the chickens forage on their own outside of a coop/run. You must still provide access to chicken food and water at all times.

Chickens will naturally go back into their coop towards evening, well before dark... they can't see in the dark and are usually settled onto the roosts well before the sun goes down.

I can't answer your question about space. I don't know the ratio but your coop sounds nice!

The run is for protection (usually has covering on the top to protect from hawks and climbers) and for confinement. Some places don't allow free ranging so they must be kept confined.

Hope this helps.

Some people use a chicken tractor that they move around their property to give the chickens new grass and bugs but keep them safe and confined. There are many options.

Edited to add that you might want to post your question as a thread to get more responses since this thread is about lawn clipping! Good luck!

I've been on this forum a long time and while I DO give my birds grass clippings there was a thread on here a long time ago that said it could cause an impacted crop.
