Lawnmower vs Rooster GRAPHIC PICS/ Saying Goodbye

Hi Lorije1

I too picked up this thread a couple of days ago and keep logging in to see how things are doing, i'm in Northland, New Zealand.

I'm new to Backyardchickens and this is my first post.

I have been thrilled to watch someone else go far and beyond the norm in looking after this delightful Rooster.

Also all the helpfull advice that has been pouring on to these pages, i have copied the receipes into a "Chicken Medicine" page in my computer.

I have learn't so much from you all reading these pages, i even went out lastnight with a high powered torch & high powered reading glasses while putting them all to bed, and had a really good look at the head and feet of each one as they sat on the perch, all looked very healthy. I'm sure they all thought i had lost it....

I have nothing to add to the care of Kubota, you are doing a fantastic job well done.

My tuppence worth i thought i would share with the community is, i had 2 little chicks about 3 days old, i have no idea what was wrong but their poo went funny and the first one too die had mucus coming out of its mouth. I didn't know what to do, so decided something was better than nothing. So i got a small steel bowl with a lip all around the edge, and put a piece of chicken wire over the top, then placed boiling water in the bowl, put about 6 drops of Tea Tree oil, 6 drops of Eucalyptus Oil & 1/4 teaspoon of Honey. Placing this very carefully into the container the chick was in and covering the container over the top with newpaper and towels to keep the steam in, leaving this in there till the water went cold. I did this 3 times a day and the little chick survived.
I did this for another chick that was about a month old, that stopped eating, by the second day he had jumped out of his container and i found him up above me on a perch. He's now a lovely big Rooster.

I know we all feel like we wish we could help you do a shift here and there, but not possible, all that work and managing to keep us all posted with his progress, fantastic effort.

The missing toes won't disable him too much if the infection is under control. A friend of mines hen decided to lay an egg in their burn barrel..... problem was the barrel was just cleaned out and they had been burning the night before. She jumped in not aware of the heat below, had a hard time trying to get out, getting what looked like 3rd degree burns and most of her toes sluffed off. We debrieved the wounds, cleaned it up with a iodine wash and slathered her feet in lanoseptic. She survived the ordeal, still laying an egg every day and is now known as Crispy... LOL

I just had to come here where someone would understand.... I am back at work and we have had a HUGE SEVERE thunderstorm roll in. Rain in sheets, high winds, thunder and lightning - and I can't get in touch with my dad (next door to me) to go check on Kubota and close the trailer door!!!

I just worry about him being soaking wet, on wet towels until I get off work at 1am.... 6.5 hours!!
My folks still aren't answering their phone. It does so much good for them to have a cell phone

ETA - my dad finally answered! He said he was stuck out in their (detached) garage during the storm - saw lightning hit their pool filter and fire shooting up over the fence!! This is about 60ft from where Kubota is!! He said he will go check on him and close the door once the worst of the lightning has quit.

Still worried about the grumpy bird (Kubota, not my dad

You can go to www.weather.com , use zip code 32533 and look at the map tab - the "past" selection at this point

I meant I was calling Kubota a grumpy old bird, not my dad!!! I definitely don't want my dad out in this - we have had about 4 lightning strikes on our 4acres in the last couple of weeks! (hard on the air conditioners - and evidently the pool filter)

You should try putting my zip code (85364) on that website, makes me wish for some T-storms
