Lawnmower vs Rooster GRAPHIC PICS/ Saying Goodbye

could the green be bruising under the skin? I have a hen that gets pecked hard on her head a lot.
(I still don't know what she said to them!) anyhow, it was green, then it returned to normal, so I assumed bruising. I hope that is all it is.
Try to stay optimistic and keep up the good fight. We are all rooting for you!

It is probably bruising that is healing. Yellow legs + blue bruise = green
I would suspect a fair amount of bruising considering his injuries. I think the leg actually looks pretty good. I know you are not used to looking at these kinds of wounds but they often look just hideous for awhile. He's eating and there is no smell and so you are doing just fine!

Keep up with the sugardine. You may have several weeks of this, perhaps more. His nutritional uptake will help the healing but what he needs most in time and attention to keeping that wound clean, sugardined and wrapped. Smear the sugardine on thick under those wraps, be generous with it. Don't wrap it too tight.
I have a very good feeling about this. I think Kubota will come out of this minus a few toes, nothing more. The peg leg will give him street cred

Kubota is so very lucky to have you, Lorije1! I commend you for taking such excellent care of him, when many people would have given up. He looks to be in good shape given the circumstances. Keep it up, and keep us posted!

It could be some dead flesh or a bruise. Either way, it looks pretty darn good for a rooster fighting a lawnmower lol. You could probably do the ointment, a dash of povidone and the sugar. That might apply better.

I sure hope you're right.
I was thinking of working his good leg some to keep the muscle strength, but I have spent so much time with him I have not been working with my 16mth old foster horse and he is getting obnoxious. He kicked me today, I managed to get my hand up to take the blow instead of my face getting it.

I have 3 more days off work, tomorrow I will be gone most of the day so I am hesitant to put sugardine when I am not here to watch for ants. Friday is my birthday, so it will be a slow day lol. Saturday is Farmer's Market. I have to go back to work on Sunday evening so the 3-4 times a day wrapping will end... it will be 2 max, on good days. I will give him "PT" a couple of times on Friday and Saturday, let him out to flirt with the girls (that really did perk him up some, it seems) and pick at the grass.

I don't know if I mentioned my vet fixed me 7 days of pencillin injections? He said if after a week I am still concerned to let him know and he will see what else they can do for me. He said if I am willing to let them read up and study some then they will help any way they can. They rock so hard.

ETA - Mr B said he was cutting grass and Kubota was against the fence. Mr B was gonna go around him and give him room but Kubota ran to the lawnmower instead of away. Still don't know how only that leg was caught up in it... but I suppose that is bad enough!!

Wow... that could have happened to me! My favorite hen loves to follow along with the mower and eat the bugs that I kick up... and she has NO fear! I will be much more attentive from now on!

Definitely! My chickens will be in their run from now on when there is a tractor running, even though they never go near it.

One of my BR and Stink, my EE have been perched on teh gate so they can see Kubota. Hope they are cheering him up.

I haven't read all the posts on this thread but a great way to keep a chicken quiet while you work on it is to wrap it in a towel and make sure it's had is covered. If you need to soak it how I do mine when they get a sore and it needs soaked I use a gallon size ice cream bucket and put enough warm water to cover what needs soaked but no farther than half way up and pour salt in and mix it up. I very slowly set the chicken in the bucket of course making sure it's feed go in. Then I cover it up with a towel. I had one in a bucket for 25 minutes today without a problem. She just sat right down in it and waited. As long as it's quiet they will be quiet. Then when I took the towel off I just picked up the chicken with the towel making sure it's head stayed covered. I just flipped her on her back and worked on her foot. I even did a quail this way except I put the lid on the bucket.

To wrap it you can use the non stick gauze pads and then wrap that with duct tape. U can do another soak to get it loose enough to take off.

Thanks
He is pretty compliant with me working on him. The most he has done is clicking like a velociraptor - sounds vicious. He does flap around a little more, so I may need to wrap him to perserve his energy and keep him calm.

I was wondering about soaking his stump in something... epsom salts even crossed my mind but I can't imagine how horribly that woud burn!!!
