Lawnmower vs Rooster GRAPHIC PICS/ Saying Goodbye

You may want to try to catch him some crickets with a handy dandy cricket trap. It will catch anything that crawls on the ground though...so, you know, don't go reaching your hand in before looking to see what you caught.
We used these in Entomology to get our Orders and Families . Take a deep can, dig a hole, put the can in the hole and place a large funnel in the can.
If you get a soda bottle cut off the top (then cut the threaded part off), and invert the top into the bottle (without the threaded part), then you have a insect trap. Place something over it, like some leaves and see what you get. If you want them dead, put it in the freezer.
We used oil in the bottom to make sure they got good and stuck. I suppose you could use olive oil and Kabota could have Italian flavored crickets. a little basil might be nice.

..as far as the worming, he might have never been wormed. Which means it could be a heavy load. From what I gather, that has to be handled with some care. I'd do a serious 'search' first before you decide what to do.

You are doing a wonderful job!!...and it isn't even your chicken...yet.

This thread is one of the reasons I can't wait to get on BYC at night when I get home. Yippee Kubota!!! And yeah, you have a wonderful vet, sounds like mine!! They take care of those that take care of critters not their own. Keep us posted!

A friend of mine raises game birds and the feed he uses is for game fowl which has 24% protein whereas my chick crumbles have 16-18%. That may be an option. I love reading about Kabuta and how fabulously you are caring for him.

Lorije, if you want to pm me your adress I
'd be happy to have one of the reptile supplier places ship an order of bulk mealworms or crickets. It usually only takes a couple of days to be delivered. I also would feed a grower feed with more protein content. What about vetwrap and some gauze??? If you don't want to have us help via PayPal, how about pitching in with a few supplies??? PM me if this is an acceptable option for you..... Also, big

to your vets and staff! I have quite a few critters and I know how bad the vet bills can get. Compassion and kindness, nice!!

My name is Lori (I'm from WI) and I, too, have been reading this entire thread (found it listed in the newsletter).

You go girl & although I cannot afford much, I will also pitch a few dollars in from PayPal for supplies and/or feed)!!! Just send a PM with email address (like I said it won't be much - but if each of us pitches $1-3, you should be set to keep doin' what you're doin' and not worry about the poor house.

That vet bill - wow - how will you manage?

I give my girls beans once a week or so - they are loaded with protien (vegetarians survive on them

). I can't afford to buy ready-to-serve canned beans for the chickens so I buy a bag of dry beans (really cheap that way) and soak them for a day or two.

I just can't wait to hear the part about you getting to keep him - because he would have certainly perished without your help. This chick opera has been sooo full of drama & suspense - I'm addicted!

May God bless you for all you do & give you the strength to keep it up (you're one cool chick

) and, Kubota (you hang in there dude - we are all pulling for you

).

I wouldn't worm him now, I just read something about a kitten that was recovering from someting horrible, but really getting better and then the vet wormed her and her system just couldn't handle it and died. UNLESS you see evidence of worms in the stool etc. I didn't see that part if you said so, if there is then you would want to do something maybe herbal and mild. Good luck and if PMs are the way to go send one my way! Thanks also for your nice posts about my chicken! If she doesn't get better I'll send her to you!!! JUST what you need right?!!

You could feed him some DE mixed in his food it is a natural worming substance. It also repels fleas and mites. Have you tried tuna? It has lots of healthy fats and protein.

Yea definitely right about the worming bit. Sorry, I certainly wouldn't want to do anything to Kubota after all you and he have been through.

As far as earthworms that someone suggested DONT do that, it is one thing for them to catch them on there own but if you give them to many they can develop 'gapeworm' and this is pretty horrbile stuff. The worms live inside their throats. Yuck! nobody needs this!

When he recovers he will put his weight back on I am sure but I would keep giving him the extra eggs and sprinkle the vitamins over them or mix them in.

Do you have a pet store locally? They may have the meal worms. I would not go any larger than the large ones because the bigger ones are not as good for them as the smaller ones. I raise the large ones and they are no longer than an inch, or maybe I don't let them get that big.

Good Luck in finding themif you can
