Another idea...

My roosters found one of my son's toys to be very distracting. It's a bouncy ball that lights up with red and blue blinking lights when moved. They play with it until I take it away. Not sure if it's super chicken safe, but they seem to mess with it without much damage to the ball. I think we picked it up at Wallmart... not one of my finest parental moves, but I was at my breaking point with my very irritable son.

Might get your guy going a bit...good luck!

You are doing a sterling job, i would do all of the above suggestions, plus put 1 or 2 of your little girls in with him, he is lonely and bored and depressed. I had a little chicken that was sick, all i could do other than medication was to put a Shocking Pink hand puppet in with her, what an ingredible difference that made. Suddenly she went from 50 50 going to make it or die to Ye Ha i'm alive and i'm getting better. Also instead of the tennis ball, i'd put in a false egg if you have it. He just might gather it in under him or close and get comfort that he's doing something to aid his kind

Also what about a handfull of grass?

I had to go back and learn how to upload a pic.

She used to snuggle in under the wings, one morning i found her underneath, in the hand part snug as, she thought it was great having company, even though it was shocking pink and yellow

Those towels have glass bottles full of boiled water in them working as hotties.

Hope it gives you some ideas

LOL that is an awesome pic of your little chick!
I don't want to put any of my chickens with Kubota right now because he was so covered in mites. I dusted him once, but I want to get him again before I let my girls any closer (so far they are clear for mites that I can see).
Believe it or not I couldn't find a mirror for him to save my life! I will have to go buy one though, because I think maybe that will help him out some.

Don't have time at the moment to go back through the thread - but whoever suggested mac n cheese - SCORE! he seemed to really like it! I didn't give him too much because of the side effects too much cheese has on humans

... anybody know if it is the same for chickens? I did rinse off some of the noodles and give him just those, he wasn't nearly as enthusiastic, but he did eat them. I will see if I can round up some spaghetti noodles somewhere.

I think I mentioned in my "poor me" post about losing electric off and on at my trailer? well, my dad said it is a bad breaker, probably the one effected / hit by lightning a few weeks ago. I have to have it replaced because everytime I turn on my microwave it shuts down power to my house!!! So I just walk down to my parents house to cook my microwave mac n cheese LOL.

At the start of my break (I am at work shhhh) I walked by the big windows and I saw blue sky!!! It isnt' raining right now and there are huge thunderheads to the north and east, but I saw blue sky! I had to climb into the horse trailer and lay Kubota on top of the kennel to work on him. I set the sling up alongside the kennel, but he didn't want anything to do with it. I guess if I want him to stay in it at some point I will have to tie him down

. I left his leg unwrapped, that always makes me kind of nervous. Hopefully I can catch a clear spot tomorrow to do a good cleaning, soak and wrap session. There is only about a 60% chance of rain so there is hope. Even better, maybe it won't rain at all and I can find a spot that isn't so muddy you sink in it to let him out in the grass.

Friday is when we go back for another vet check - hopefully to get some more of the dead tissue trimmed and another good report

I was just reading through this thread and noticed the difference in Kubota's appearance from the first few days and now.... he is soo pale. I have GOT to get him to eat more.

It makes me question myself all over again

Oh man Lori, a pale chicken scares me too. After Nan went to the vet I had to stop and get gas and I looked at her and her comb was almost white. Scared me to death.

I don't know what to do about Kubota. I think he needs interest in life. If a mirror would do it (I know some people like this!) great! But if not............ The will to live is almost the MOST important thing. I understand your not wanting to put your chickens in with him but mites CAN be treated. What if you get a chicken from craigs list or someone that has too many, maybe a young one or a bantam and dust her with de daily to prevent a huge infestation and give Kubota some company. I really think he needs some avian interaction. I'm betting that his rooster instincts would kick in and he would do the treat call and all that. Get his mind off his bum leg.

Good luck! I'm still waiting on Nan to stand up I think I'm going to go with the vitamin B theory. The calcium theory was kind of a wash!

I think you should take up that offer of the crickets. That would help him too. Can you get live ones? He needs something that moves and breathes in there with him! Even it doesn't breathe for very long (in the case of the cricket!) I wish he could read. I think he would love Harry potter. Harry potter and a rainy day. Doesn't get any better than that!

ETA: I'm sure you have vitamins in his drinking water. or would he not drink that?

Just remember, I know his comb is more pale, BUT he's been through a LOT. He's hanging in there, and that's what's important. Don't worry too much about his comb. I know that in a lot of species, bright color is due to sexual activity. I think this can hold true in chickens. I know it's true in the hens. The favorites, and the ones higher on the social ladder have brighter combs. Some of my hens have pretty pale combs, not a lot brighter than Kabota's, and it's just because of their place in the pecking order. I wonder if some of the pale new look Kabota has, is that he's no longer getting the "action" of being top Roo? You mentioned that he WAS one of, if not THE top Roo of mr. B? I bet just not having that interaction has had an impact on the comb color. Then add his recovery to the mix. I wouldn't be second guessing yourself!! You're doing GREAT.

I would not put a mirror in with him..He will think its another rooster.. (trust me..i am bringing in my roo every night to treat for bumble foot... and whenever he looks in my bathroom mirror..it pizzes him off!..)
I'd put a hen in with him, if anything.
