I believe yellow legged birds can show laying status by depth of color on legs.

The older I get the more I realize how little I know.

As BackyardChickens didn't exist when I started out over 50 years ago, I remain grateful to my Grandpa Shook and Dad for teaching me the ropes and developing my lifelong love of and learning about chickens. I am now helping my nephew and his son get started. One of my favorite quotes sums it up for me:
