layer pellets vs. layer crumbles

The cheapest I have found is 12.95 for Payback pellet or crumble Thrifty Layer.

I did by some field run wheat at .08 cents a lb. as a supplement.

I spoke with a local feed mill and they told me that pellets and crumbles are made the same they just use a different screen that cuts the pellet smaller, same time involved either way.

I feed chick starter for 8 weeks, crumble 16% for another 6 weeks and then pellets.

You would think it would look like a small pellet rather than looking like rolled grain.
But maybe mills make it different ways.

The mill I talked to said they cut the pellets shorter and I have bought thier product and that would be a fair description of thier crumbles. Payback brand crumbles has some long pellets in it and what looks to be broken up pellets. I have seen other type of crumbles that does not resemble a pellet at all.

Hey Chris09,
Where do you get Mash, and how do you feed it to your chickens? It looks like powder to me.

I actually feed mine both. I find that the pellets seem to last longer and they eat less. I mix crumble and pellets together since I have a flock of two different ages. Everyone gets what they like.

My hens will not eat pellets.... even if they are starving.

My chickens started on a medicated crumble then went to layer pellets. I got layer crumbles because TSC is the closest feed store to me and, yeah, they do mark them the same price. But the crumbles just seem to make a mess. Plus my girls like to knock their feeder over when it gets low and then its an even bigger mess. They'd eat spilled pellets off the ground but even the ducks won't scoop up the crumbles. Its like it somehow breaks the five second rule (but vedge and other treats are just fine). Think I'll go back to pellets!
