Hi- I'm a newbie to chickens and have been browsing the website for information since April (when I got my Easter chicks). My pullet/hen is now laying eggs and I will soon be switching to laying feed. My question is: does the amount of laying feed affect the chemical balance of the egg and make it not good for human consumption? In other words; should I be monitoring her feed more than I have been in the past to make sure I can eat her eggs without there being a risk to my health?

Also- I bought the Chicken's for Dummies book, but this particular questions did not seem to be answered...

The layer feeds are mostly balanced. If they are laying an egg that has a good shell strength; they are probably getting what they need. You do not need to be a chemist to have healthy hens. Just food available at all times, water and some oyster shell for extra calcium. If you can give them some treats of foods like pumpkin or greens go ahead. Do not worry about the balance. Do not feed more than a small amt of scratch grain or corn. LOL It is like candy to them. I do feed some just before they turn in for the night. The eggs will still be healthy. Gloria Jean
