We have 17 month old laying hens for sale here in St Augustine Florida.
We are selling seven of our one year 4 mo old laying hens (hatched mid February 2008). $15 each.
There are three Rhode Island Reds, two Buff Orpingtons and two Barred Plymouth Rocks.
They are from our family flock and are all happy, healthy and good layers. We are selling these seven because we are halving our one year old stock and have recently introduced the pullets weve been raising for four months. We want our flock to be of mixed age, so they dont all stop laying at the same time. You can expect chickens to lay their best from the ages of 1 to 3 years, but they will continue to lay long after that, especially if allowed to free-range and given a nice, happy, natural life.
We free-range our chickens every afternoon in the yard from 2pm until sundown. We do 4H with our chickens and use no pesticides, only diatomaceous earth and Sweet PDZ outside in the run and in the henhouse to neutralize any ammonia smells and discourage flies. We use pine shavings to keep the hen house pleasant and dry. We feed our hens natural vegetarian feed and kitchen vegetable leftovers our goats don't want. They eat bugs when they range in the garden. We showed some of our chickens at the St John's Ag Fair last October, where they tested negative for salmonella and lice.
