One of my hens goes through all of the motions of laying, including the "singing" when she jumps out of the nest to announce her latest egg. She stopped laying a year ago and we find this strange. Does she really think she's laying an egg?

I doubt it, but she is participating in flock behavior and it probably comforts her to be part of the producing gang. It may be tied to her position in the flock, too. After all, once the eggs are laid, they're mixed in a pile...(prove it isn't mine)

Mine hens do it to if an other hens have lay and egg. An social thing maybe?
The funny thing is that my bantam rooster is singing with the girls too if he sees them laying an egg. Stand next to them and sing as loud as the hen that lays the egg.
