Can a hen lay eggs without layer feed. I have some pullets that are nearing laying age and was wondering if they would lay the feed. I know that they don't need a rooster but not sure a bout the feed

The only difference between a layer feed and any other poultry feed is protein and calcium content. They will also function fine on a grower, flock raiser, etc. as long as protein is in the 16-20% range and they are supplemented with oyster shell for calcium. The reason people feed laying feed to layers in because its simplest and it works as a complete ration with no supplements needed.

Layer feed is specially designed for a hen's body. However, hens can still lay without layer feed provided. You do need to be sure they are receiving extra calcium. But, other types of feeds are fine to give and shouldn't cause problems.
