    I have 2, 5-6 month old chicks.

How old should they start laying?

They are a wyandotte/rhode island red mix with a little bit of another breed.

I need to know to figure out gender.

you can usually tell by the comb/wattles at this point (my 'hen' all of a sudden became a roo a week and a half ago!)....

big wattles and ear flap things behind them are most likely gonna belong to a roo.

Well they have combs that are less than an inch above their heads, may be 1/4 of an inch. They have some wattles, but small. The comb is pink of one and red of another

They sound like they should begin laying soon... The red usually tells you that they are gearing up. But also I had some girls with light pink combs laying, so it's hard to say. But you should be exspecting anytime soo. Good Luck
