Learn Your State's DOG LAWS

I live in NC and have had this come up a few times. I contacted the local magistrate and in his own words you "can defend your property" in regards to others' dogs coming on yoru property and killing the animal. I have walked to the peoles's homes and warned them that it is my right to kill their dog if it comes on my property and chases or kills my chickens. I have fired warnings at dogs with pellet rifles. Last January my neighbors' dog came onto my property and killed several different chickens including my prize aracauna rooster. His body was in their pasture. I asked them to pay and they cussed me out saying unless I could prove it they wouldn't pay. Yesterday the neighbors' dog returned and killed 3 of my sex-link hens. I caught the danged animal killing one of my girls and went straight to the owner with my dead girl's body in hand. The dog's owner appeared to be upset with me; but my girls were on my property. I called the sheriff's office and was told to take out warrants on the owner. The problem I have is these are my neighbors and don't want any hard feelings, but I have been told they were going to train the dog to stay away from my chickens and they didn't. To answer one person's comment if I had to shoot another's dog I would because you have to look at all the cost of feed and care and the potential loss of eggs and babies. I was just lucky I caught this dog yesterday because I could have lost more of my hens and even my ducks. We have to take care of what is ours, too.

I am really sorry about your hens coachhaze. That is a shame that neighbors can't respect your property and keep control of their dog.

We have a neighbor below us that has a rental property on their small piece of land. Their tenant has a dog that insists on coming up to our property to stalk our birds. We called the authorities and the owner denied the dog was up here. We video taped him circling our quail pens and stalking the chickens and gave that to the dog warden, who fined them..now twice due to our video coverage on the most recent incidents. We even got him coming up on our property to retrieve his dog and hitting it for not responding to his calls. I don't want to shoot the dog, but the dog warden insists this may be our only option, as it takes them hours to respond (sometimes days). He did warn them that one more violation and the dog would be confiscated. I think the 2 fines did it and they have kept the dog restrained so far. Only time will tell how this ends up.
