Learn Your State's DOG LAWS

I find that a pretty remarkable accomplishment, myself. Not once? EVER? I can't even imagine.

We've never really had a dog escape. My akita would wander too far when I was out with her which is why she was leashed whenever out of the fence up until 6months ago. We've never had a dog leave the property while unsupervised though.

I guess I was thinking of "escape" differently--as in just a dog slipping out an open door or through a gate or something. I have definitely had that happen. I've never had one just bolt and disappear, though.

First thing my akita learned is not to go through the door without permission. Now I can wedge the door open, unload groceries, walk out to the coop to feed the chickens, go get the mail by the road, and when I come back she will still be standing in front of the door waiting for me. No dog we've had would go through a door standing wide open without permission. Even as puppies. I don't know how people have dogs slip out the door and escape aside from young pups and young pups usually don't go far. Complete lack of training I guess.

Yeah, I don't get dogs who BOLT and just run off. I don't know how that happens. My dogs do have a "wait" command every time the door is opened, but they will take advantage of my daughter sometimes, and go out without permission if she's the one manning the door. It's something I should really follow up on and reinforce before it gets serious.

I guess I'm kinda lax about it since we're in the middle of 5 acres that are fully perimeter fenced. Getting out the door is not a huge issue here, so I'm not consistent about enforcing it. I'm more militant about the fact that NO dog is EVER allowed to precede me through any doorway, because that's a manners and respect issue.

My sister lives in a subdivision, and her dogs run out her front door every time it's opened, which makes me insane. They don't run away or anything, but it would still make me very, very nervous!

hi akane..mine have gone through the door..and please dont assume its from "complete lack of training"....they dont do it anymore..as they are older now...but when pups..it can happen even if you are ceaser milan.(maybe you are..

..).lol...as for the deck gate thing..yup..they will still slip through it if someone dosent close it properly....

..i'm not gonna come on here and lie..and say..my dogs are perfect..they have "never" gotten out..thats not who i am...so please dont judge(when i'm trying to be honest)..and say my dogs have a "complete lack of training"....i have 2 130# dogs and one 90# dog...i do foster care with other peoples children....lol..they HAVE to be trained somewhat(wouldnt you think..?)...i'm not a complete idiot....(well..okay..i am an idiot..on most things..

..but not my dogs..).thanks...Wendy...

edited to add:..when they have gotten out...they dont go far at all...and a piece of bologna and my cue "come on...in the house"..always works..after they have ran off some steam..for a few minutes...then they come to me..get their bologna...and walk right back in my house...through the front door..cause thats the way i've taught them to come home...i never scold them for running...i always give them a treat..as soon as they come to me...they really do come right back for me..

Darn skippy. If you count the hours of time starting out from eggs where I originally turned them myself 3x a day for 18 days. Sitting up for two days because I was freaked out on my first hatch upon pipping. Feed expenses. Built cages and homes for them. Sit up all night with a sickly bird and all the other things that go into this. Then the dog owner says something like, "Oh sorry about him killing three of your birds. What do I owe you like 10.00?" That's almost an invite to smack the jaws of the owner.

I looked up Indiana's laws and found out that you can kill a dog that's killing or worrying your livestock, or someone else can kill the dog with your permission that's killing or worrying your livestock.

I also found an Indiana case where a farmer was sued for killing someone's coonhounds that were messing around his poultry pen. The court ruled in favor of the farmer, because the dogs were roaming without their owner present.

I don't have a gun-yet-but it's nice to know I can legally dispatch a dog that's messing with my poultry!

aside from young pups and young pups usually don't go far

I think you missed that part. Yes you have to watch puppies because they don't know any better. People who have older dogs who will bolt through the door especially pushing their owners aside are the ones I'm talking about. I don't see how people allow that. Escapes like that shouldn't happen.

Yeah, I don't get dogs who BOLT and just run off. I don't know how that happens.

Having an akita I actually do understand this. They like to maintain about a 1 mile radius for their territory if you let them and they have a high prey drive. If your not paying attention and haven't put in the training they will bolt and you will be collecting them from 3 miles down the road. I knew that when I got mine and was responsible enough to always keep her on a leash until I could trust her. Now I still usually keep an electric collar on her for those times she zones in on something and ignores my voice.

I'm not saying my dog is perfect. I'm saying any responsible owner should be able to maintain a zero or at least real darn close to it escape rate. If you put in the proper amount of time and effort to keeping and training your dog you shouldn't have to worry so much about them bolting out the door or similar things. It should be a rare occurance aside from youngsters and new dogs you haven't had time to work with yet.

Apparently, before we moved here last year there had been a pack of dogs roaming the area. This is a popular area for people to dump off unwanted animals I guess.

Anyway, my neighbor also had a wolf that was running with them. I guess one day one of the neighbors just got sick of it and anti freezed them all. My neighbor with the wolf called the police but because we are rural they said it was legal.

My dog has NEVER roamed or left our property. She has been trained to be with us and has no desire to run. She is a Labradoodle and not a hunting or running dog. Just a family dog and we never use a leash and she will not leave our side when out. We would never leave her out unsupervised anyway.......especially since I learned this about the anti freeze.

I have shot bb guns at dogs that come in our yard at night. I also have a hand gun that I have shot oppossum and coon with. We have also trapped animals that are pesty and then shot them. I don't feel bad about Oppossum and Racoon but would have a hard time killing a dog if it was just nosing around.

A week ago a small, clean well kept dog with a collar and ID came to our door barking late at night. It had played out in the yard with our dog earlier. DH was asleep and I wanted to go to bed but it kept barking at our back door. I let it in and kept it in the bathroom for the night. The next day I called the vet to get the owners number. I called the owner thinking she was probably missing her little dog. She got real defensive about it so I explained since she is new to the neighborhood that it could be fatal for the little guy if the WRONG neighbor sees in in her yard.

She was still kind of defensive and it's still roaming the area. Wonder what she'll say someday if it dies of anti freeze.

All you can do is warn them.

IF I saw a dog killing my chickens I would kill it on the spot.........but not just for nosing around.
