Well how about my kids pet deer we had from day 3. They bottle fed her and after 2 yrs, their heart was broke. Yes we had a permit to have her. Dogs next door kill her in her own pen. For me my birds mean more than any dog.

Yes if people think so much about their dogs, keep them under control. What next after livestock a small child.

I don't know--our community has no leash law, and no animal control because we're not inside city limits.

Two strands of hot-wire is a cheap and easy improvement on a less-than-secure yard. Worth a try, anyway. Put one strand a few inches from the ground, and another one toward the top of the fence.

For darting out open doors, that is something that is a pet peeve of mine, so I work hard to nip it in the bud. My dogs have a "wait" command every time the door is opened, and they have to sit quietly until I say "OK" and release them. Even so, though, my daughter occasionally accidentally lets one out, so nothing is foolproof!

thanks....for the wire idea!...i bet i could find a way to do that..i have outside electric outlets that i could plug it in to..thanks for that idea!..appreciate it...Wendy

If their dog is so valuable, they ought to keep it at home on their own property. That's why laws were made this way.

Well dogs can get out.....
I think you should atleast try to find the owner before you shoot a dog.

Yes anything can get out. So many children have been bite and some cases killed, because a dog got out. If the dog owner had to pay a big fine, maybe they would not get out.

All stray should be shot, then they want get out again. To kill or hurt someone,or some animal.

My chickens are my pets, my companions, they are NOT replaceable. Any dog on my property threatening or even appearing to threaten what is mine will be killed in any manner available. No discussion, no looking for the irresponsible owner. Been there, done that and have 4 dead beloved pets to prove it. I will not make that mistake ever again and here the law is on my side.

deerman...i am very sorry that dogs killed your familys pet deer...it must have been awful..espically for the kids..so sorry..Wendy

hi jenni2142...just a question..do you have any dogs?..i'm just curious...thanks, Wendy

I don't care what has a higher monetary value. The neighbors dog is not worth more to me than my chickens. I didn't spend $100-$1000s on their dog only to let it wander down the highway to my house. I did spend several $100 on my flock so far and countless hours taking care of them. Even if it was something I picked up yesterday for free and it got killed today it's still worth more to me than someone else's dog. I will try to give a warning. I sent the tagless aussie shep home with a blue paintball mark. That's my warning and he did come down the busy highway to get to my house. I just don't know which house he came from. If he comes back and attacks my chickens some time I don't care if he's purebred or not and it also doesn't matter that I love australian shepherds. My pets are worth more to me and I can only do so much to discourage someone else's animal.

Besides if you get a free dog from the paper is it worth less to you than a $1000 purebred? Even if it's a really great free dog? Despite the fact I have a $1200 purebred akita she is not worth more to me than the $50 unknown mix I grew up with. I didn't get her for her price tag that's for sure. I was just looking for something specific and if I could have gotten that for free I would have and she'd still be worth just as much to me. Monetary value has little impact on me.

My friend and neighbor at my old place had a really bad situation with another neighbor's unfenced Rottweilers (not that the breed has anything to do with this story). They dug under her fence and killed numerous chickens and pigeons and ducks of hers, and she called the owners several times. Finally, she told them, "If I catch them killing my birds again, I am going to have to shoot them. PLEASE keep them home." You guessed it, the dogs were back within just a couple of days. She caught them in the act of killing a banty rooster, and shot and killed them both. She cried as she put the bodies into trash bags and large trash cans and set them out by the road, and was still crying when she called the owners to come pick up their dead dogs. She is a true dog-lover, and it tore her up to have to do that because of the stupidity of the humans involved.

The same friend, when another neighbor's Chows came over and bothered her sheep, called the owners and was simply told, "If they come over there again, just call Animal Control or shoot them."

I don't understand why some people even WANT dogs.
