how frizzled feathering occurs and how to represent that as letters.
I can't get into the exact mutations that cause the feathers to curl,
@nicalandia can probably get into that for you.
But I can cover the basics.
There are two alleles, F, and f+.
F represents frizzling.
Frizzling is a semi-lethal Co-dominant gene, and when heterozygous produces frizzles, and when homozygous produces frazzles, which have extremely brittle feathers, and often have other issues such as enlarged organs.
That is why responsible breeders do not breed Frizzle x Frizzle.
F/F x F/F = 100% F/F (frazzles)
F/F x F/f+ = 50% F/f+ (frizzles) 50% F/F (frazzles)
F/f+ x F/f+ = 25% F/F (frazzles) 50% F/f+ (frizzles) 25% f+/f+ (smooth feathered)
F/F x f+/f+ = 100% F/f+ (frizzles)
F/f+ x f+/f+ = 50% F/f+ (frizzles) 50% f+/f+ (smooth feathered)
