Leaves in the run?

I could have kicked myself because I just took a truckload of leaves to the community compost. I am dealing with a muddy run and looked up info on byc. I came across this thread and had to try it. Thanks for the tip. Good thing I had more raking to do. The girls enjoyed it this afternoon.

Every night (before it started raining) when the girls would go to bed I would rake up the leaves in the run so when I let them out in the morning they would have a fresh pile of leaves to keep them busy and quit for a while

My chickens loved the leaves, they finally broke them all down into tiny pieces, so I took them out.
I thought what else I could put in there for them and then it occurred to me dried pine needles that where laying on the drive.
I raked them up and took two large wheel barrows into the run, Wow they had a blast

I raked up the rest and am keeping it for a little later in the season.

Oh, my chickens LOVE leaves in their run. I usually have to keep them in the run all day while I'm at work so they need things to keep them busy. A big pile of leaves keeps them scratching and they make the best happy chicken noises! Throw some scratch in with the leaves and watch them go nuts!
