Leg band advice

Leg bands are fine if you inspect your flock regularly and they are confined. I had a terrible job getting some of the leg bands off the chickens when I got here. They had been put on while they birds were young and as the birds grew the scales grew around the bands as they got tighter and tighter.
The same applies to zip ties. Also with zip ties as Ridgerunner mentions, they tend to get brittle with the cold and here UV light turns them brittle as it does many plastics.
Wing clips or ties I think are probably better on free range chickens. Zip ties and leg bands can and do have got caught on twigs and fencing here.
One of the men from the chicken club here paints a stripe on a wing with nail varnish. It needs doing on a regular basis though.
