Leghorn chick tail feathers..

First time for white leghorn chicks. They are 9 days old and their tail feathers are pretty big! or at least distinct. is this typical of the breed? my other chicks, RI Reds, and Wyandottes don't have the tails like that... or at least not yet. :0) Having so much fun with them though.

Very typical.

I have one Trader Joe Leghorn hen and two tiny leghorn pullets following a broody around.... long tails.

i have a white leghorn aswell that now is 11 days old and the tail is almost non existant

I have read a few posts now that say no tail feathers are roo, but some say still to young to tell. It is so hard to wait!

We had chickens 8 years ago. We bought 12 hens (sexed) from the local tractor supply. 3 ended up being roos.

we didn't know
until they started crowing. If we would have known more we probably would have known before. LOL! I have 5 adopted adult Bantams
and 6 new babies. We have not had chickens for quite some time so I am learning new stuff all over again!

Here are a pix of my leghorns. They're 4 1/2 wks old. Bought at pullets. I would think if they were male, their comb would be bigger at this point. Their tails kinda point out and form an upside down V

Thats what my 3 girls look like too! They are 5 weeks on Saturday. One of them has a tall comb already, and turning pink, but they all have longer tail feathers than my red girls

They are so cute! I can't wait for mine to get bigger! Boy, at 9 days they are great little flyers! Almost escaped the brooder while I was changing water!
How soon did you have your babes outside? are they just out for some fun or out permanently?

Oh yeah. They're the main reason I had to put my chicks out. We have 4 and each has a colored drop of food dye on them, but we need a better way to mark because that lasted about 3 days. Yellow, Chrystal, will fly up on you and roost on you. She's the most likely to do that. There combs are getting a slight pink hue to them now. And they're growing fast. They're still small compaired to my Red Rangers, though.

I LOVE my chickens. I wish I could have more ... lol. Some Barred Rocks!
