Here's a long Leghorn story, happened 2 days ago:

So I just got a chicken tractor set up, and I was moving chickens in the tractor to the coop, and chickens in the coop to the tractor.

I started with the little ones in the tractor, got them in the coop easy. Tractor is empty.

Then I went to the coop, started with my 2 roos thinking they'd put up a fight, but I snagged them with my chicken hook easy.

Then started with the ladies... Harder to hook, took some time...but... got 3.

1 hen remaining.

This hen... Was trouble. There is reason why she was last... Super fast, never comes close.

Anyway, she sees light through the door to the coop, pushes it open, she's free.

Makes a straight line for the thick woods next to the coop. She's gone. No way I can get her in there.

I'm pacing back and forth, trying to see... About 30 minutes I give up, start going inside..

Then, she peeks her head out of the woods, I run to get on the other side of her so she comes out of the woods. It works.

But now I have to actually catch her... And she won't let me get within 40 feet. I am hating this hen . So much.

I ditch the chicken hook and get my net.

Hen goes to the chicken tractor.. she wants to be with the roo

I open it a little bit, and have her go that way hoping she will go in.

Nope.

I try again, open it a little wider. Mind you this is probably 2 hours at this point of trying to get this hen.

Hen gets close to the door... Doesn't go in... Starts to run away

BUT, Roo comes out! He grabs her to mate!

My chance! Net comes down, I try to net them both mid-act.

Rooster somehow dodges it, but I get the hen!

With the hen in the net, I use the pole to guide the roo in and close the cage. Done!

I got some Australorps coming in a few weeks, hopefully they are easier to handle

Omg, that sounds like how it went with me one afternoon when I tried to round everyone up after a hawk took a swoop. I had a leghorn hen and cochin hen give me the worst time. Who thought a cochin could move that quick? Lol.

Does anyone have advice for eliminating extended white in the face? I have a couple hens that were breeder prospects, until they hit their 2nd year. Then the white showed up. I hear that can be a common issue. So, is that something people accept or do we wait until their 2nd year to see if it crops up?
