Leghorn Thread!!!

Does anybody here have experience with Isabella leghorns? I just put in an order for some hatching eggs. I'm cautiously hopeful that'll get some hens out them :fl

I'd like info on temperament - do they have the typical leghorn personality? How well could they get along with my 2 bielefelders? I'm considering keeping them in the same pen/coop (if the hatch goes well).

My experience is they are pretty much the same temperament. There are individuals of course. My cock bird is quite docile yet the hen has been nicknamed Jailbreak. Also, when raised from hatch with other breeds, I've not had any troubles with a mixed coop. I have Bielefelder with my light Brown Leghorns, Cochins, and Silkies.

I finally got an egg from my fancy colored leghorns. A Silver Leghorn hen laid her first egg a week and a half past 6 months. After having production leghorns it sure seems like a long long wait. Decent sized egg for a first egg. I was expecting a bit smaller since it wasn't a commercial leghorn. The Red of my Fancy colored Leghorns ( I just have Red and Silver) are a month older so I am still waiting to start my project.

I have 3 handy of the Red Leghorns. I will go out and take Silver leghorn pictures tonight or tomorrow.

The Red ones have many flaws but the hatcheries were upfront about that. People are still developing and some of the flaws make my Columbian leghorn project a little easier. Red Leghorns are supposed to be pure red but many of mine have a Red Columbian pattern. I really like the Silver leghorns, not sure of their quality from a poultry show goer perspective but I know what I like. I have Dorking's with the same pattern and I am using Red Rangers to make Columbian Pattern Dorkings (light Dorkings). I am 2 generations into that project so I have a bit of a peak into where this project is headed.

These are (3/4)Silver Grey Dorkings (1/4) Red Ranger ... same patterns as I have with leghorns, so I have a peak into the future as to where my Leghorns will be in 2 generations. A few Columbians, a few red (incomplete columbian) a few Silver Duckwings (silver grey or silver) but most are somewhere between Silver Duckwing and Columbian with red leakage. The Male Columbians have no red leakage and will be fathering the next Generation.

After I make Columbian Leghorns I am crossing them with Production Leghorns then back to the Columbians for the sake making my Columbian Leghorns into laying machines. Make them the perfect hen for making Sex Links.
